Cymbal regret

I really thought I’d like this cymbal, but I don’t. I just received a new 22” Paiste Traditionals Light Ride and I thought I’d love it, but compared to my 24” Paiste Masters Thin Ride, there’s no contest.

The 22” is dry without a lot of shimmer and plays like it’s thicker. My 24” has this awesome “tah” sound and of course, starts to wash if I look at it wrong - but it feels so much more musical.

I suppose I should give it more time, but I’ve been playing it straight for two weeks now and I’m much happier when I put the 24” back on the kit. I may sell this 22” is anyone is looking for a new one at my discounted price plus shipping 😉

Sorry about your disappointment. Been there. Done that.
I’ve also gone through this. But I suppose I could keep it for when I need that sound. I mean, it’s not like it’s a Paiste Alpha or one of those lines I’d never play. It sounds a lot like Steve Gadd’s ride cymbal I heard on all those records he made in the 70s - good ping, but no real spread or shimmer. So I can make it work if I have to. But if I have a favorite that I’ll use all the time, not sure I’d ever get around to using this one.

What size stick are you using?

My 20" Sig. Trad. turns into an ocean of wash when I use 5B sticks, but with 5A sticks its ping has a more prominent blend with the wash.

I use both the 55A and regular 5A - I don’t think it’s the stick. It’s just the way the cymbal is. I bet I’d like it if I didn’t love the 24” so much, though. It is very K-like, darker and no shimmer quality. It could be Tony’s on the Miles Davis live album “Four & More” too.

If it's not right for you, Bo, sell it. Get something else you'll like.

Not that you “need” a new ride or anything but Bo you should talk to Nicky Moon. Send him a recording of the sound you want, with any details about size, weight, sustain, the bell, the feel under the stick, and he will make it for you. I’ve bought two custom rides from him and it is nuts how accurately he nailed what I asked him for.
Edit: literally the day I posted this, Nicky announced he is no longer making cymbals. Ugh!

So, what's gonna happen with this cymbal?

No remedy Bo just a misery loves company reply. I recently bought a 20" Istanbul traditional original ride from Memphis drumshop. This is the second ride that didn't match the demo (at all). Probably various reasons but I'll keep it. It will be hard for me to ever trust a demo again. Like your ride I may use and like it someday. I hate that feeling. It's a constant reminder that ya...ive got a ride in the corner that I'm not crazy about.

I don't mean to add insult to injury, but I could never understand buying a cymbal by sonic description or an online sample. To me, it seemed like gambling, and I don't gamble. I've spent time overseas (Army), in Nevada, playing poker and now casinos abound here in Michigan - you could put all the money I've spent on gambling in a $50 bill. I need to hear me make noise with a cymbal. Even better, I'd like to take it home and try it for a week, but that doesn't happen in real life.

Sorry it didn't work out Bo - I'd say keep it for a while and see if it grows on you.

Well, ironically, I heard so many examples of this cymbal that sounded great, I figured the samples can’t all be wrong. I didn’t think anything else could sound better. But because it was not available to me directly from Paiste right away, I tried the 24” Masters first, which they did have, and I love that cymbal. I love it so much this Traditional model doesn’t come close. The wash isn’t there because of the lack of shimmer, and washing has become my thing now 😉

Some cymbals, especially B20's, take time, sometimes months of playing, for the metal to settle down. It took about 3-4 months for my K Con MTL to evolve from a clanker to the sweetest cymbal you've ever heard. You can accelerate the process by playing lots of cymbal rolls.

But this wasn’t the case with my other Paistes, which I also bought brand new. Right out of the box the Masters, Giant Beat, Big Beat, and my Traditionals hi hats gave me exactly what I was expecting. The hi hats are my barometer since they’re the same as this new Traditionals Ride - and to other ears, this Traditionals Ride probably sounds great, just not to me, and definitely not enough to make me grab for that one first.

I was just offering a possible solution. But, not all cymbals ripen equally. My K Con was dramatic. My K Custom Special Dark had a very minor change.

I've never owned Paiste's, not a fan. But, I know that they are very consistent compared to Zildjians, and not all Paiste's are B20. The Paiste formula and method, that makes them so consistent, may also make them what they are always going to be out of the box. Only way to know is play it a lot, add a lot of daily cymbal rolls. And see what happens over the next few months.

Bo, can you post up a video so we can hear it?

I wasn't familiar with that model (not a Paiste guy, really), but I checked out some YouTube samples. I liked some quite a lot, but I heard much more variability than I'm used to with the 2002 line. Weird.

you know here's a little philosophize' n

Paiste likes to hit when a market is hot. What was it 1996? They needed a "jazz" simbol. They were pushing and were deep in the B15. Their B20 was gone and their joint Turkey ventures were in a distant future

so they hatched the Traditional Series and it was hot, for a while.. look^ at the line up at the time ^.
In 2024 no wonder they didn't have one on hand it's kinda passe past due date
don't have to make any excuses
