there was/is a Dave Weckl maple El?
Yes, there was.
That's why I bought them. I'd never heard of Maple drumsticks at the time, so I wanted to try them out.
I think that's why they call the current one's "Evolution". Mine were an older version they made back in the....90's? I think that's when I got them.
It was a long time ago, I know that.

Is that normal?
every run/batch of a model produced has Light/Medium/ and heavy. In a brick (unless specified) will be all three. I've got this from well informed insiders. So variation is norm.
I've gotten and come across Harvey Mason and Steve Gadd sticks So heavy as to be unbelievable; when you don't ask.. 😁
Other times light as a feather

I tried 747s once because Neil used them. Like tooth picks back in the 80s. Now my hands and shoulders have had surges and I need the lighter wood. 5A but I will use a 5B then and again.

747's light? Back in the 80's?😂
Man, those ol' Pro Mark brown tips were some of the heaviest drumsticks I ever played.
I hated them because the weight made them too slow for my tastes.
A lot of metal drummers I knew back then loved them because the wood was so dense they'd take forever to shred,

yep...I loved those sticks back then. They were solid, and I felt like i didn't have to do as much work to get solid sound and feel with them

and they did last forever

and Mr. Peart used them

Used 5A most of the time. Found a bunch of 5Bs in my bag and wondered what that was all about. Then remembered the last time I played was on a Roland TD7. IIRC I was having response and triggering issues with lighter sticks.

Lately been buying 7As just to see hiw they feel.

I think that comes from what part of the tree is being used for a particular pair.
IIRC, Heartwood is more dense than Sapwood, so the sticks that come from the center of the tree will tend to be a little heavier than those that come from just under the bark.
....I could have that reversed.

As my Guitarist says, the correct answer to the question is "It depends...."
Most of my current gigs are on the low volume side, so Maple sticks help to soften the sound, especially on cymbals.
From quiet -> loud

Regal Tip 8A Maple
Regal Tip Bob Gatzen Maple (Wonderful cross-stick)
Regal Tip 5AX
Regal Tip 5BX

I also have a pair of Regal Tip 5A-E Nylon tip, if I need some extra clarity on cymbals

Do you still currently use Regal Tip?

I thought they went out of business, or basically selling off their remaining inventory?

Have you had any issues getting their sticks recently?

Yes as I have 3 boxes of various sticks still to use.
Retractable Wire Brushes I'm using various Promark models for now.
Did get an email from RegalTip on 22nd October saying the RT 583Rs are back in stock?

Haven't looked at it yet as shipping to Ireland would be prohibitive right now just for some brushes.
I hope they can get back to regular store store soon, or at least distribution in Europe?

Just checked they are currently only shipping to USA/Canada. at www.regaltip.com

Some interest and fun knowing what stick selection most use here.
Not a comprehensive list.
I used mostly Ahead sticks which would be more consistent size and weight wise but still not significantly enough to make them much different than their wood counterparts. I use 5a for acoustic drums and 7a for electronics as I don't need the mass to produce volume.

Time for more experimentation.
Just got a notice that Regal Tip Jazz nylon's are back in stock, so I picked up a pair of those and a pair of wood tips, to compare.
Man, pricey! I hope this works out.

I took these out for a spin again last Friday

2024-02-16 12.41.03.jpg

They felt off the last time i used them several months back. Been using Vic Firth 2B's the last few sessions since i felt that the Maple SD9's i was using the last 3 years or so started to feel off. I wanted a bit heavier stick, so took the 2B's out again and really liked those. Then it dawned of me i still had these lying around and took them for a spin again. Also had some VF 5B's lying around, but those felt too light. Picked up the 2B's and obviously those felt heavier, but most of all more ping from the ride and hats. Then took the Ahead Rock sticks and BAM! More ping on the ride and hats, but they're slighty lighter than the 2B's. Decided to play the entire session with them.

They have a really small 'perfect zone' for rimclicks that i have to get used to. Swapping to the butt end creates great rimclicks, but i rarely have time to swap the stick around in time. And for the rest... they felt really good! Maybe the transition from the maple SD9 to these was too much, but from 2B's it's much easier. Love how pingy my ride is now and with these sticks i don't need to replace it. Near the end of rehearsal my shoulder and arms started to act up, but i will play with these next time to rule out if it was the setup that day (it's a shared kit and i have to set it up every time) or that these sticks need a different technique. Have read that these sticks reduce vibration and are better for the joints and muscles, but we've also moved into our new house and moving all that stuff... it takes also a toll hehe

Hope that next time my writsts don't act up again and that these are the sticks. Really like the idea of only replacing the sleeves and that you can use the core of the sticks for many years. Fun fact; my guitar played commented 'you look like Lars Ulrich with these sticks' (had to explain that Lars uses the same brand etc hehe)

Whelp.... back to the trusty 2B's again. I tried the Ahead Rock sticks again last Friday and after 3 songs i felt my shoulder and arm muscles acting up again. Immediately switched back to the 2B's and didn't had any problems yesterday with my shoulders aching etc. Liked how the Ahead sticks feel and how much definition i get out of the cymbals, but somewhat sad that my body also has a negative reaction to them (read that more people experience the same or similar discomfort). Really like the idea of just replacing sleeves etc., but this experiment has ended haha. They do made me realise i need nylon tips again for a better stick definition on the hats and ride! So time to see if there any nylon tipped 2B's.

Nylon tipped 2Bs have been my go-to for decades. Last year, a drummer buddy of mine sat on my kit and played some songs. He referred to my sticks as "clubs"! :)

I tried Ahead sticks years ago but they felt kinda slippery. I went back to wood.
