Prog Rock/Metal bands with interesting drumming

Hello! Have been detached from Prog Rock for some time but would like to get back into it now. Any good suggestions pls? Thanks!

Maybe it's me but most of the stuff that passes for prog rock these days is garbage. The best stuff I've heard since Rush's 70's era and Yes's 70's era and Peter Gabriel's Genesis era is Tool and their offshoot band APC...I would like to start a 3 piece prog band myself but i don't that I'm creative enough to keep my own interest for very long. There's never going to be another band that will create another 'Hemispheres' or 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' I'm afraid. Maybe it's the result of the music industry now...Everything seems so bubble gum. Prog rock may be a dead dinosaur.

Anybody heard of Riverside? It's a polish band, I belive... Really good stuff

There a ton of them out there. It just takes some sorting through. And some are more prog than others.

In my CD collection:

Rush
Dream Theater
Fates Warning
Dead Soul Tribe
Katatonia
Orphaned Land
Shadow Theory

James LaBrie from Dream Theater put out a solo album a few months back that is rather good.

And from there you can listen to:
Spocks Beard
Transatlantic.
Symphony X
Riverside
Redemption

And so many more.

Dude, go to Pandora, put in some of these bands, and see what "similar" bands pop up. Then expand your list. I'm loving it, personally. Haven't touched my iPod other than to rehearse in weeks.

Yeah theres loads.

Older:
Pink Floyd + (believe it or not he was the roots of prog rock)
Yes +
Genesis
Fates warning +
Rush +
King Crimson

Newer:
Porcupine Tree +
Dream Theater
Liquid Tension Experiment +
Tool +
Dark Tranquility
Symphony X

And those are just a few. I put the plus next to my favorites, but they're all good.

For my prog listening time, it's anything with Gavin Harrison in it. So, Porcupine Tree and related projects. Been spending a lot of time with the 05Ric albums lately. Takes a huge effort to get past the vocals but the underlying music and drums are simply astounding.

This is my mates band.

"Mission Profile" - Threshold

He plays bass in it. There are some interesting bridges here (double kick); that sound good! They tour a lot in europe; following there. The drummer uses a 5-piece kit, double-pedal and basic cymbal setup. Won an award one year, as best UK rock drummer.
Johanne James.

Double bass drummers. Exceptional chops. Youtube these guys

Bobby Jarzombek
Aquiles Prester

Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen (gospel chops, single pedal) - "Viscera Eyes" Live.

Um, don't almost all prog bands have interesting drumming? That's the point, isn't it?

Lots of good suggestions here - and don't forget Frank Zappa.

There's tons of old prog that's a bit obscure and not so many people know any more such as ...

Prairie Prince from The Tubes really tore it up on their early prog albums before they had to pay the bills:
Up from the Deep - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TQF0cmMnu8
Pimp - http://www.youtube.co/watch?v=qQqJDFJouYA

Simon Phillips was amazing on 801 Live:
East of Asteroid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GA89EfQ0Pg

Joe Blocker with mixed things up a fair bit with Steve Hillage (a brilliant, if spacey, guitarist):
The Glorious Om Riff - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUHPZiCVIF4

Woa, interesting list going on there. Thanks all!
Anyway before i drifted off, i was listening to PT, DT and Opeth, King's X primarily. Will check out those i haven heard from the list. And yes anything with Gavin Harrison!

As others have mentioned, check out Porcupine Tree with Gavin Harrison.

Also check out his solo DVDs and CDs.

One of the most interesting players around.

Brilliant feel and technique

You cannot get Pandora outside of the US unfortunately. If you are in the UK as I am, search for last.fm. Similar thing I think.
