Who is your favorite drummer(s)

Re: your drum gods!!!

Two reasons. He's no longer living and Toto.

On a side note, Toto is giving a free concert at Mohegan Sun casino in CT tomorrow night. The Porcaro family grew up in the Hartford area resulting in a PACKED room. And it's not your Mother's Toto. Simon Phillips drives that band in a way that Jeff Porcaro never did.

Sorry, I didn't realise dead drummers were excluded. Nor, looking at the lists, did quite a few others.

Toto wrote some unbelievably cheesy and awful songs, without doubt. There's no point us getting into a Porcaro/Phillips argument, because you clearly have different requirements for what you like in a drummer. However, if you've only ever heard studio Toto, I would suggest you watch their Live in Paris DVD; Jeff definitely kicks the band in that one, and the overall sound is much fatter. It's also a lesson in groove, taste and everything else he was famous for. I'd also just like to check you know he did quite a bit more in his career than play with Toto...?! Here's hoping.

Okay, let the flames begin...
I don't like Art Blakey's drumming very much sometimes.

Hey, there's plenty of great drummers I don't like sometimes. Just to really get the flames going, I've never been too partial to Tony on "Four and More" myself for some inexplicable reason. But Art Blakey is pretty inarguably a master of swing. I've never been a big fan of his soloing, but in all honesty I've never been a big fan of soloing at all so I don't really care about that part. His time playing is everything for me, and that's amazing...

Re: your drum gods!!!

Porcaro owns all, cant believe i forgot him off my list, Ooo the shame :(

Toto are cool amazing drumming, minor cheese admittedly

Re: your drum gods!!!

I agree totally with everything. The only comment about Porcaro/Phillips is that Simon's playing really fits the band better (IMO) because of the direction Lukather has taken the band. For the Porcaro fans, Roseanna simply isn't the same. :D

Re: your drum gods!!!

To OliverLawford - don't worry, you are forgiven ;) Jeff forever!!

To Mlehnertz - I do have a TOTO album with Phillips somewhere, Mindfields I think it's called, and I was impressed that he (at that stage anyway) restrained his playing to fit the TOTO sound. I was familiar with him from Luke's solo stuff, which although hilarious (what's that track in 17/8?? It makes me giggle) wouldn't really have fit in with TOTO songs. I've never heard how he deals with playing original Jeff stuff like Africa or Rosanna, and, well, I don't think I ever want to. And that is meant as no disrespect to Simon Phillips; hell, you wouldn't have caught me taking over Jeff's drum seat, even if I had been asked...dream on Womble hohoho.

Re: your drum gods!!!

He doesn't deal with it. I'm a huge fan of Simon Phillips but he will never replace Jeff Porcaro. To his credit, he doesn't really "try" to copy the feel of Roseanna because simply I think he knows he never can duplicate that groove. Or Africa. It was Jeff Porcaro's signature groove.

But listen to Simon play "Jake to the Bone". Holy crap. Porcaro never had chops like that.
