What's your Drummerworld number?

Being bored stuck at home, I had a thought. How many of the Drummerworld Top 500 Drummers have I seen perform live? Living in LA helps, as every tour comes through town, I go to NAMM every year, and the local jazz clubs host such luminaries as Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl and many more. And until recently, the Guitar Center Drum Off Finals were held here, where I saw even more greats.

So I looked at the list, racked my memory, and counted up 76 77 79 81.

What's your number?

A few rules:
  1. They have to be from the Drummerworld Top 500 Drummers list. If you saw a famous or prominent drummer not on the list, it doesn't count.
  2. You had to see them playing drums. Running into someone at a restaurant, seeing them walk around NAMM, etc. doesn't count unless they were behind a kit. I once saw Joe Morello at a NAMM booth playing a practice pad, but I'm not counting that. Has to be behind a kit (or equivalent, for someone like Luis Conte or Tito Puente).
  3. There are a few people listed twice on that list (i.e. Jack DeJohnette is listed among "D"s and "J"s). However you can only count them once.
  4. It can be with a band, at a clinic, playing solo, whatever, doesn't matter. As long as you saw them playing drums somewhere, it counts.
  5. It should go without saying, but internet videos do NOT count.
  6. Bermuda, if you decide to play, I'll let you count yourself. :)

Anyway, here's my list.
  1. Tommy Aldridge (Yamaha Groove Night @ NAMM, early-mid 2000s)

I just remembered that I saw Aquiles Priester a few years ago at some studio opening event I was invited to, so I updated my number to 77.

Also, in case you're not familiar with the Drummerworld Top 500 Drummers, you can find the list here:

I'm disappointed that your number is so low... I thought you would have blown me out of the water!
Maybe it's because you were on tour so often???

There may be a few others I think I might have seen, but I don't recall the details, so I didn't count them.

I saw ZZ Top and Mothers Finest in ~1981 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Frank Beard was part of the ZZ Top lineup at that point so I'm adding him to the list. For Mothers Finest, neither Sanford Daniels nor Barry Borden are on DW so.
I saw Kool & The Gang at the Van Halen concert. George Brown is listed as their current drummer, yet he isn't on DW's list so.
I saw Rick Allen play w/ Def Leppard in the late 80s in Huntsville, Alabama, yet he's not on DW's list. He's the guy who lost his left arm in an accident and learned how to play really good with his feet.

Oh I've been around. For way longer than I'd care to admit!

BTW, I think Elvin Jones is my most impressive entry (and which gives me the most cred'). I wonder how many people here can claim to have seen him!
Yep I would agree. I completely missed that one :)

BTW, I think Elvin Jones is my most impressive entry (and which gives me the most cred'). I wonder how many people here can claim to have seen him!

I saw him at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA in 89 or 90.
And then he did a full band concert at Pasic (?) in 91/92 (?). It was a big drum event, but he did a concert, not a clinic.

I'm disappointed that your number is so low... I thought you would have blown me out of the water!
Maybe it's because you were on tour so often???

I should add a few that I forgot:

Aynsley Dunbar (w/Flo & Eddie)
Nick Mason (The Wall tour)
Dave Garibaldi
Jonathan Moffett
Levon Helm
Glen Sobel (in a clinic way before he was known)

So, new total of 22.

I really don't see that many concerts, but I've seen some great drummers not on the list:

Neal Smith, Bozzio, Pete Thomas, Larry Mullen Jr, Doug Clifford, Kelly Kaegy, probably some others I've forgotten. Not to mention some drummers whose names I don't recall, playing with artists such as Bette Midler, Manhattan Transfer, Barry Manilow, Cult (pre Matt Sorum) etc.

I saw Marcus Gilmore (Roy Haynes' grandson) w/ The Vijay Iyer Trio at the 2015 Portland Jazz Fest, but he's not on DW's list?

I was at that very show!
I was at the famed 300 level where the sound sucks. But you don't go for that as much as the spiritual connection thing anyway. So I went for a short bathroom break that turned out to take much longer as I found a sneak route to the floor level, well halfway down the stairs to the floor level just as Tom Sawyer began. Everyone including security was looking in only one direction: the stage. Best standing seat in the house!

EDIT: Wait, which show? I'm talking about Moda Center. The Jefferson Civic Center was the one they caught me with a Pentax SLR body in my left coat sleeve, and a 100mm zoom lens in my right. They let me keep the camera anyway :)

Danny Seraphine, Liberty Devito (Billy Joel), Dave Stark, Derek Roddy, Dom Famularo, Terry Bozzio, Duane Norman, Florian Alexandru-Zorn, Jon Bermuda, Greg Bisonette, Steve Gadd(James Taylor)
Jon Blackwell, Marco Djordjevic, Mark Schulman, Ray Luzier, Ringo Starr, Stanton Moore, Todd Sucherman, Johnny Raab,
Tony "TC" Coleman, Trent, "The Beast" Easton, John Favicchia, Steve Ferrone. Most were clinics. Bermuda, Sucherman, and Ringo in person.

Wow that's quite a list. I'm wondering which of those you had to literally drop everything you were doing at a moments notice to get to see. That's too many not to have some close calls LOL

Impressive list. Looks like you're in the lead!

5) Vinny Appice - Once with Dio, and again with Carmine at a Drum Wars show
Forgot about DIO! Saw them in the early-mid 80s when I was in middle school. So I need to add one more to my list.

7) Louie Bellson - Numerous clinics, and once in concert
I met him at my local drum store when I first started playing, but I never saw him play so he's not on my list.

13) Bill Bruford - with his jazz band at a Tama show at Namm
We may have been at the same show. I remember it was with Earthworks (his jazz band) for something related to NAMM in the early 2000s. For some reason I have difficulty remembering a lot of details about this one.

19) Bill Cobham in concert at a jazz club in Los Angeles
At Catalina's? If so that's another one where we may have been at the same show.

35) David Garibaldi - in clinic at least once.
I would have seen David Garibaldi with Tower of Power at the last NAMM, but it was my friend's birthday so I had to leave right after the show instead of sticking around for the after-concert. :(

37) Omar Hakim - with Sting
Even though he's already on my list, I think I may have seen him with Sting once or twice a long time ago. But I can't say for sure.

42) Akira Jimbo - in a clinic when I worked at West LA Music
You worked at West LA Music? I was a regular there before they closed. I wonder if we knew each other.

43) Elvin Jones - Several times.
Even though I've seen him, I've only seen him once. Jealous!!!

45) Will Kennedy in clinic with David Garibaldi
Will Kennedy is another one who I think I may have seen play, but I can't remember for sure so he's not on my list.

54) Rick Marotta At a Yamaha event at NAMM
I've probably seen him at a Yamaha Groove Night, but I can't say for sure. So not on my list.

61) Carl Palmer with ELP playing support for Deep Purple
I saw ELP once... the other ELP (with Cozy Powell). I thought he wasn't on the list, but I just checked again and there he is! So +1 for me.

68) Jeff Porcaro - Once, Toto played at a Remo show at NAMM in like 89? 90?
Jealous!

92) Billy Ward - He did a show for DW at NAMM a million years ago
I think I saw him play at NAMM once a long time ago, maybe at the same show you saw. But I can't say for sure, so I'm not counting him.

97)Tony Williams - Once, in a clinic at Gelb music
Jealous!

Yes, I meant the Moda Center Show. :)

And hopefully that wasn't a terribly expensive lens! Ouch!
