anyone know what this snare is at beginning? Is it some sort of 14x10??? Is it aluminum or steel? Recommendations for getting this exact kinda sound if I can't find this snare?

sound similar? afaik just a 5X14 Supra with magic tuning +/-

That's a video so I suspect there may be trickery afoot. As jda said, almost any 5x14 tuned high can get a similar effect.

Here's the Specials' drummer, John Bradbury, talking about his actual setup.

Even the exact drum used in the recording probably doesn't sound like that in real life. Microphones, processors and recording engineers create a sound quite different than what you hear from the real drum.

thanks for replies - so could I get same sound from a gretsch 13x7 steel snare? Or is the original track an aluminum snare? Needs to be 14x5?

He was a Pearl guy. I've read he used Jupiter snares. Steel and COB. Not sure if Pearl was even making aluminum snares back then (1979 was the song). You can look thru Pearl catalogs here ....... http://www.drumarchive.com/Pearl/

But like others have said, chasing a particular studio sound ...... there's a lot going on "besides" the snare itself, to what your hearing.

It's a steel drum on most of the records. He died a few years ago, nice player.
