Weird drum related things that bother you, but probably no one else?

How about playing complicated parts for the sake of showing off? Dream Theater, any Math metal bands and not just the drums the guitar parts too, they play a good pattern, then they ruin it by constantly getting out of it to do a quick scale, then back to the pattern. That not only annoys me, it just kills the groove, Animals as leaders, about 80 tempo changes on some songs. To me it becomes very boring because of the constant getting out of the groove.
That is why I don't like (but I recognize their skill) players like Annika Niles or Senri Kawaguchi or any other on those styles.

while I grew up, and still am, a "prog head", I do agree that it has to come in the right doses.

the same for "money beat" too....more than 2 or 3 songs of money beat, and I am bored to tears

but in the end, i would prefer to listen to 8 hours of Animals As Leaders over 8 hours of Purdy Shuffle

I hate a “traditional” 5 piece drum set up. Like where the 2nd rack Tom is where I feel the ride should be.

Some great players use this setup. But always felt it was so generic looking. I dunno I be judgin when I see that stuff
To me, both the single and double rack tom setups are equally common and generic looking (the single rack tom setup is so much older, it seems more tired looking to me, but I'd still do it if I decided on one less voice) but the reason for it is because those are the best positions for setups with those numbers of voices. Where else would they go? (I know they can be placed literally anywhere, but they're commonly placed where they are because that's the most comfortable for the most people.)

I've always played a two rack tom setup, but I got tired of having nearly everything set up off to my right. Bought a rack and moved the rack toms over to the left, so that the first tom is directly straight in front of me, just beyond the snare drum. That also brought my ride cymbal to the left by the same distance, so it's easier to reach. I love this setup so much that I duplicated it with my rehearsal kit which is on stands.

Thank you for that. I often wonder what people are thinking when they approve something like that. For cymbals they are OK I guess, but for tom holders? OMG help me out here. I have to use my electricians pliers to get them tight enough. Or whack one of the wings with the butt end of a stick.
Gibraltar makes a tool for it, but yeah, with longer wings, it wouldn't be necessary. 💯

  • Tambourines, or anything that sneaks tams onto them, like hihat-mounted tambos, tammy sticks, etc.
  • People that play tambourines.
  • People that make tambourines.
  • Reaction videos.
  • Unboxing videos! The people who make money on unboxing videos must wake up laughing.

Can't argue that.

sounds sort of like my set up

my ride is a-la Nicko McBrain though

any kind of tape on cymbals is a travesty to me...just horrible*
I don’t like it either…but I have to do it in select instance. I have some inner conflict in this honestly but I have to go with sound, if I could put 70 years of patina instead on the same cymbal, sign me up. That would actually would be a great service, like a Kerope or Avedis…or custom mod is another option , worth considering, hmm

I'm not gonna thrust my opinion on anyone who's not my student, but as an on-again/off-again teacher, I cringe when I see someone smack their hand on his/her thigh with every snare drum backbeat. Why? 😵‍💫
LoL! I found myself doing that the other night at rehearsal - the snare stand had loosened up and was creeping down.
If I have it set to my preference my left hand misses my thigh by 2 inches.

I highly suspect you are the guitar played of my band and has snuck onto this forum. He hates tambourines with a passion too 😆

Brilliant!

Oh and i agree with other posts about logos: i can't stand when the logo's of the heads aren't centred. A drummer i know showed a pic of his setup and his 14" had the Remo logo at the top and the 16" at the bottom. Just annoys me haha.
Other thing is different heads. You find this mostly on house kits at smaller venues/clubs. Two toms have Pinstripes and one has an Ambassador as batter head. At closer inspection they actually put one of the toms upside so the Ambassador was on the top and the Pinstripe on the bottom. Or even put a coated head a snare reso and a clear had on the batter side (i know this is an option for a certain sound, but still it bugs me)

I honestly don't care about much of this stuff.

Bad musicianship (especially when combined with arrogance) annoys me, but then again it should annoy everyone.

so the patina thing...I was just looking at my now 41 year old Zildjian Rock Ride...and whne I bought that cymbal new in 81, I had also inherited my dads Zildjian A's from 55...so they were roughly 35 years old in 1981. It is weird how the old Zildjians "patina-ed" versus the newer ones. My 80's era Zildjians didn't end up browning like the 50's ones did...and my 90's ones also didn't, but the 80's and 90's ones hold finger/handprints longer

dads cymbals had a small amount of masking tape on the bottom, but it was so old, it jusr flaked off

Not many things. But most flourishes I used in the past that I thought were so damn cool I find embarrassing now. Particularly the using the left hand to do a mini roll using the bounce of the stick on the hi hat or snare. To not do those little unnecessary annoying things to my mind is the mark of a real pro

How infuriating is this:

I love a Meinl Ching Ring on my hi hat, or maybe sitting on a crash sometimes.

I like the classic two toms up over the bass drum 5 piece kits the best. (But my next kit will be a virgin bass 3 piece setup!)

I love my 16in medium thin crash!

My throne definitely swivels.

And here's the worst of all-
I play left handed/open handed with my ride cymbal OVER MY HI HAT ON THE SAME SIDE!
GROSS!

lol it works for me, but yeah what drives me insane is the non ergonomic craigslist tom angles setups from hell, and lots of tape and gel all over the place unless you are recording and chasing some particular sound.
