Carl Palmer Venus snare

Would someone who's played one of these provide their review of this snare? I've heard it played on youtube but I'd like a drummer's perspective.

Thanks

I've had one for a couple years. The only way I can sum up this snare is that it makes me sounds 10x more talented than I actually am.

It's excellent and don't let the smaller size fool you. It's big sounding and a heavy MF too :) Plus it's signed by the master himself.

This may be an old thread ,but nobody really answered it.

I bought one on sale a few weeks ago and there is as much good as bad.

The Good : nice fit and finish, not incredibly expensive and a decent brass attack tone.

The bad:the bottom snare gate is way too narrow and when you attempt to drop the snares off ,they never fully release from the bottom head causing a pronounced rattle.

It ships with a cheapo drum key and snare cords as opposed to a nylon ribbon which Carl recommends in place of those cords.

The heads shipped should have been Ludwig branded not unlike the black beauty or supraphonic.Instead it's a Black Magic branded head.

A nice snare but very flawed.
Check out pics on the snare gate on my Brass Sensitone vs the Ludwig CP.

Using a no-collar Remo Clear Ambassador would clear up the snare gate issue. It'll also give you a little more breathing room before running into the snare butt too.

Anybody got an email for Ludwig customer service?

I would like to send them a nice opinion of what I think of this snare before I send it back.

That snare gate is lousy.
If they're all like that they are they should be scolded for it.

Turns out the throw is also not particularly well thought out too.

Al Schneider the drum doctor over at Gelb says he's seen the same thing on early DW's of that dimension.

We're talking a fairly expensive name brand drum here.

Are they taking lessons from the software companies and shipping a poorly designed product without testing?

I have the same issue with my 4-inch Supralite -- the snare throw is crap and when "fully" disengaged, it pushes the snares back up so they rattle. I have to slowly disengage and find the sweet spot where they don't rattle. I've kept the drum because I actually like the way it sounds, but rarely use it because of the snare problem.

I've never seen the Venus in person, but from photos, the Supralite and Venus (aside from shell materials, hoops, etc.) seem pretty similar. Has anyone else seen both drums? Are they kind of the same design?

Do you know if this is a definite fix?

I spoke with the engineer at Conn-Selmer and he said the are doing redesign in the Spring of 2017.

Yes. The no collar head will offer you about 3/8" more clearance when cranked down. I love those heads. The Ludwig snare side is a pretty shallow collar as well. Ambassadors are the deepest collars I've seen. I use Remo no collars exclusively on all my snares. If Evans made them, I'd switch, but as of now they don't. I put a request in to Ben (EvansSpecialist) to ask Evans to make them.

The no collars custom fit to each snare bed with no "corner" to disrupt things. It's just the way to go on a snare side, beings that it gets cranked so tight, with such a thin stretchy head. But mainly I like them because of the the extra clearance. I hate when my bearing edge is even or a little higher than my snare side rim.

No,I already tried that and the fix should be a new throw.

What ever happened with your snare?
Did you get a different throw or did you return the drum?

Thanks.

Dave

Returned it.
Ludwig gave me an additional refund and Carl's management offered me tickets to his next US tour.

Who did you deal with at Conn-Selmer?
I was dealing with the chief design engineer and a marketing person.

Brenda Gorsuch and Ryan Taylor.

I've always wanted to try a Venus snare but the problem is, I don't know if Guitar Center sells them.
