This thread is for all the lurkers

Change "no" to "limited" and that's me, then.

You should embrace lurkers. They are reading all the info, and getting a feel for the place, before making their first baby steps. Surely that's better than registering and jumping straight in with a thread on a subject that's already been done to death.

I lurk on lots of forums. I've only joined when (a) they appear to welcome new members are generally civil to each other, and (b) I had a question that I couldn't find the answer to by searching.

I'm fairly shy, and not particularly chatty. I prefer to listen. (Except now, apparently).

See, I recognized your name, and actually I've enjoyed your (limited) posts. The one about the impact of 'blonde jokes' was a good one (I maybe feel the same way as my wife is a blonde).

Just like in all debates, "fresh eyes" are always needed on a problem, My guess is that lurkers, being "fresh eyes" could greatly add to the many discussions here, as many of the frequent posters tend to repeat the same mantra.

Lurking to me means many visits, lotsa reading but no participation.

Larry...you feel about lurkers the way I feel about the hit and run guys. They all post for various reasons, usually to ask what kind of drums do I have? How much are they worth? How can I sell these?Somebody told me the're RARE.

Or. wus up..what kind of drums and simbols are the best for combat doom armageddon total distortion in line skating death metal i am 14 and a hard hitter and usually crack a simbol 2 drum heads and 4 pairs of sticks every twenty minutes and want to learn how to spel parididdal.....HELP...URGANT!!!!!!!!!

I paraphrase, but you get the idea.

And there are those new members who threads generate over a hundred posts, where nothing is resolved, and we wish they had stayed a lurker.Fellow forum members....I give you .....Joey 182 and others of his ilk.The kind of thread where you read it, just want to impale yourself on a rusty pitchfork, and slam your fingers in a car door.

I jest,but....really.Thank all that's holy..they have meds for that now.:)

I'm a member here. I do post and admittedly less than I did when I first joined. This is due to the following.

1. Eventually I began to see the same type questions or thread subjects over and over. I understand now that this is the nature of a forum,or at least this one, and my second admission is that this is the first forum I've posted on more than just a hit and run.

2. I'm not sure how much posting is overkill or how little is suspicious of "semi"-lurking?
I mean I could easily put my two cents in on almost every thread I see,but I know it's not necessary.

3. It seems like when I create a thread, I get little to no response, and then sometimes I forget
If I've commented on a thread and haven't found a way (if there is one) to be notified when someone responds to something I've said.

All that said, I am very very grateful for this site as a whole and dig the forum alot. It kinda feels like family in a way..hope that's not too strange.

Agreed Steve, but there are the occasional deluded gems. Anyone remember Bongo John? We need more of them :) DW forum's own Wailin Smash!

Larry, maybe there's a voyeuristic element to a select few lurkers. There is some great porn here, after all ;)

And you, Andy are the Paul Raymond/Larry Flynt of Drummerworld with your outrageous Guru xxx rated drum porn.
Why thank you kind sir :)

That deserves a porn post, just to take our lurkers mind off lurking for a while.
Please, somebody buy this at the London drum show, because if you don't, I'll be forced to own it. Sorry, it's just too sexy for words. Thin steam bent cocobolo with matching signature segmented hoops, awe man -----

Oh, and a sneaky peek at part of the secret Guru shop too. That should keep the drum building lurkers here for a few seconds too ;)

Pure filth! Pass the tissues dear...

Just for the record, I have no problem with lurkers. None at all, I'm inviting them in. New blood is great! Like I like that Mikey Hanson is participating. He's a cool guy. Anthony is a great example of a great guy who is fairly new.

Guilty as charged.

I joined the forum a few months ago and introduced myself with the thread ‘If you began learning to play drums again’. I am a relative beginner, drumming for only about a year now, and was interested in the hindsight of you more experienced guys.

I had ‘Lurked’ on the forum for a few months before joining and have done since. The reason being is that any specific technique questions that I need answering I have used the search facility and found an answer of some sort to help me, alongside having a good teacher. Many times I see referrals to other threads and found this is the best thing to do, it saves repeating stuff and there are some really good responses already out there which may not appear again. Other than that I think its maybe that I do not consider myself at a level yet were I can advise or comment, and other beginners may want sound advice from more experienced drummers.

This forum and all your advice have helped me tremendously with my drumming and maybe its time I provided some feedback at my level.

That's as good a reason as I can think of. I'm not even sure if I should be giving advice either. I'm no chops technician, so I try to help a few newbies here and there with simple stuff when nobody else is getting back to them.

This is one of the very few forums I have even contributed to.

I feel incredibly singled out here and have been reluctant to post.

Mostly because I have nothing really to say. See !?!
Tailor made member profiles for specific threads- love it.
So who's going to own up to this? : )

If this site was around 10-15 years ago, I probably would have been posting like crazy. But nowadays, I've gotten to the point where I mostly don't want to take the time to craft a coherent thought that is often just ignored anyway. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that I write for a living. You'd think that would make me a more prolific writer on forums like this, but it's actually had the opposite effect. Kind of like a gynecologist no longer getting turned on by the site of... well, you know. But if I have something specific to contribute that hasn't already been mentioned, I might drop a quick note every now and then.

I read about 50 times more then I post. I find the site enjoyable and entertaining but don't always feel the need to have to post something. My life is pretty swamped with all things percussion and I get to have real interactions and discussions about drums/ percussion constantly so that fills my need for these conversations. So, that's why I'm a 50 to 1 reader to poster.

Hang loose,
Bigd

Right now I lurk more than I post and the main reason is that I'm too busy with college, I still find a little time here and there to browse the forum almost daily but usually I'm too tired to muster up the mental strenght to formulate a well thought out post.

The reason I don't post much can best be summarized in a quick story.

When I was young, I was watching a band at wedding and I noticed the singers left
hand (fretting hand) never moved on his guitar. When anohter kid asked him why all the other guitar players hands moved all over the guitar, but his remained in one spot he replied, "Son, all those other boys are looking for it, but I done found it."

I lurk daily.
I've been a member for a while, but I rarely post...not sure why. I guess I'm just shy. I did start a "covers vs. originals" thread that gained some traction a while back.
I'll try to post more, but sometimes I just enjoy reading what everyone has to say.

Then there are those who respond to threads whether they know anything about the subject matter or not. What makes this even worse, is the people trying to learn from such threads are usually very much misled. I usually just smile and shake my head. Maybe it's just to get their post count up a bit, who knows. These are the ones I'd much rather see lurking.

Ya, gotta filter the good with the bad. While we're on the topic, what is the goal or bonus of getting one's post counts up? Is there some kind of contest? Seniority? lol
