I don't know how many of you are familiar with Dave Tough. If you aren't check out http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Dave_Tough.html

If you want some really cool studies in Single, Double and Triple Paradiddles / Accents, etc... Check out this link I stumbled on for his book that has been long, long out of print.

I printed it and had it bound. My guess is it came out in the late 30's or mid 40's but I would love for someone to tell for sure if they know.

Just thought I'd share...

Thanks. I feel really guilty. But I had to download it. If any of his descendents want to contact me, I'll give them a royalty check. Scratch that. I'll let them print this out instead:

Thanks for that! These things need to survive and get in the hands of musicians whether the copyright owner- if there is one at this point- wants to make it commercially available or not. Hopefully someone will do a new printing at some point.

its things like this that need to be brought back to the surface

props for digging this out

Dave sure was an interesting person from what Ive read and heard from old timers

Glad someone finds this worthwhile.

I've been working through it myself and as a variation been making the accented notes a left or right Flam. Just adds another choice when playing through them.

I was too dumb to see that there is a downloadable PDF... great!!
Thanks a lot for providing it.

I've been in touch with the guy in Australia who originally scanned the book- he says he has a number of other out of print drum books. He already sent me an interesting Dixieland drumming book by Ray Bauduc- I'll be putting that up on the blog soon, and hopefully some more near-forgotten things.

Great. Like the Tough one. Looking forward to whatever might resurface. :)

Doh!!! I've been trying like mad to find the Ray Bauduc book. Please, please let me know when it's up!

Sure, PM me your email and I'll send it right along... it'll take me a minute to work up something intelligent to say about it, so who knows when I'll get to blogging it...

I would love to get a copy too if possible. If not I'll search ebay. I'd love to have a hardcopy sometime!

Thanks for the Dave Tough book. I had to reboot to get my pdf reader to read it for some reason, but it looks great now. That guy had a tough life (pardon the pun), but his technique was widely respected. I have tapped out the first couple exercises already.

I would love to have a copy of that Dixieland book if possible, I'm trying to study jazz drumming from its roots and I think this could be unvaluable!
Thanks!

Thanks for that dmacc. I only recently stumbled across Dave Tough's playing. Does anyone have any idea about the legalities of taking books from the internet like that.. Copyright from the 30s/40s has probably expired by now right?

Would it be possible to send me a copy of the other out of print book/books too please? I can probably return the favour :)

Cheers,
Caroline

Please do that. Post as much as you can! Very appreciated, I'll keep an eye on the blog, which I often enjoy already
