Yamaha Stage Custom Nouveau

Hey guys, after running numbers and not getting the kind of tax return I would have hoped, I'm on the hunt again for a drum set, and I noticed in a few places, what appears to be a very new Stage Custom kit with nouveau lugs. Can anyone tell me about this kit? It's not in my Yamaha price book, unless this is just the new thing for the Stage Customs.

I think that honey amber is for the newer birch stage custom. The Nouveau has been discontinued for a while:

I don't know a lot about them other than what's on those pages, but others here have had them.

Hey guys - That is a Yamaha Stage Custom with the black plastic nouveau lugs...and the finish was called Matte Sienna Oak. Shells are Phillipine mahogany and birch and that outer veneer of Oak for the finish. Discontinued quite a while ago...

The Honey Amber and Natural finishes are different than that color, and are available on the newer Stage Customs.

Regardless, those are great drums and the newer, all birch line of Stage Customs are even better!
If you can find new old stock of that kit anywhere, buy them because they're rare.
You can also find used Stage Customs in the $400-600 range for a five piece shell kit in good condition.

Plastic lugs...bad idea. A friend of mine broke a couple.
Seriously, contender for worst design ever.

And they were one of YAMAHAS biggest blunders. The plastic lugs break easily.

I've seen too many of these kits with missing/broken lugs. Advise: Stay away.
 
I've got to agree. I bought a tom with these lugs (for a great price) and while the thing sounds pretty friggin' awesome, I'm not to excited about looking for lugs for it 10-15 years down the line. Hopefully I won't need to, and I have the extra one they give you (which is telling), but I guess I'll see. Wouldn't want a whole set with them though.

I did research on this awhile back and found that indeed there was an issue with the plastic lugs braeking But I'm guessing if you're careful enough it'll be ok.

Honey Amber is indeed one of the most gorgeous finishes in Yamaha history.
 
I had a set for awhile and had no problem with the plastic lugs, although I could see how possibly breaking one on the snare drum wouldn't be hard to do.
I think if you tune drums 'normally', the tom or bass drum lugs would be fine as they are not under that much tension at normal 'rock tuning'.
Slightly off topic...but haven't had any problem with the metal nouveau lugs on my Maple customs.

If you went with Yamaha Vintage hoops on the whole kit, they'd cost quite a bit more than the drums themselves. Go with the new Stage Custom Birch if you're looking to save some cash on a nice brand new kit. On the other hand, if you want to spend a little more, I've seen amazing deals on used high end kits. Like the 5 piece Recording Custom kit that I found for my church for $900. They sound HUGE!
