What would be the proper order?

Ok I'm a little short on cash but I'm going to get a new ride for my birthday in august, and i was wondering what shoul i replace next my hi-hats or crash? or should i get new hi-hats instead of a ride? and should i trade in my Xs20's all at once?

you should get a ride over hats because hats the difference is a lot less apparent then the differences in rides. When you replace your hats you can hear the difference but rides are on a totally different caliber. After you get your ride i would replace your crashes then your hats, you could also get a pack if that would suit you, of course i don't really like packs since most have a 16,18,14,20 cymbal set up where as i prefer 18,18,14,22 but if you like the first set-up then more power to you

It all depends what you're planning on getting. If you're planning on buying a $600 ride, for instance, then you might consider a cheaper ride that comes with a $650 cymbal pack that you like. I would switch them out in this order:

Ride
Crash
Hats

Along with the different sounds, each cymbal has a different feel, too. Make sure that each cymbal you get sounds pleasing on its own, with your other cymbals, and feels good to play.

Also, make sure the change is worth it. If you get rid of your Xs20 ride and replace it with a AA rock ride, you really haven't changed/upgraded your sound THAT much for the amount of money you spent. I might keep your cymbals around until you're SURE you won't use them again. It's nice to have some options and some variety every once in a while...

Note for note, the HH is the most played instrument on the drum kit. That said, I would get the crash next. Crashes speak less than hats, but when they do speak its usually a loud yell that gets everyones attention.

Most non/drummer people don't notice HH and ride tone quality, but a lesser crash will stand-out as irritating and usually the drummer affected first.

An easy way to make your decision is find out which of your cymbals tones irks you the most.
