To remove some of the room sound. I didn't design my room acoustically, but as it happens it sounds pretty good.
Typically the warmest, fattest tones are from the close mics, so I want to shield those mics from any bounce back from my room's walls. I have room mics for ambience, I want my close mics to be dry.
The screens (there are more out of shot) reduce the reflections and control the sound.

The Mantra is a great all purpose ride. Works in many scenarios! I think it would give you some variety to your Blue Bell, Al.

Thanks for posting Chris. Great playing and great cymbals! I really like all of them a lot, but espcially that 21" heavy. It sounded much different than I initially thought it would, and the way you played it just sounds damn near perfect!
