Any Vic Firth users out there??????

I use 3A's on my set, and we use a lot of Vic stuff at my school...

Me too, and yes, way too quickly. I'm not sure what Vic Firth does that's different from everyone else but their tips chip so much faster from every other stick brand I've played.
I always be careful when playing Vic Firth. I also found a chip at the tip too on my Nova my friend Joel trade me with my sticks.

In my early days I used vf 2b's then dropped down to 5b's then 5a's. I rode the 5a's for awhile, and occasionally a maple model with a round tip, before dropping down to the 7a THEN switching to vater Manhattan 7a's. Vic Firth makes a fine stick however I prefer a diameter in the 7a ballpark with a round or barrel tip and VF doesn't offer this.

For over ten years now I've exclusively used the sound percussion 7a, it's an exact copy of the vater Manhattan 7a except I get them for under $5 a pair and I go through maybe 2 pairs a year. Not that those even break, they just start to wear out and I swap them. Usually when another drummer shows up to a gig without sticks (which is alarmingly frequent in my area) I toss them my used pair and pull out a fresh pair. Under my normal circumstances of band practice once a week, solo practice one to two times a week, and gigs one to two times a month I could make a pair last a year if I needed to.

We should start a stick swap or a 'take a pair leave a pair' thing. It would probably take a mod to facilitate but a different forum for a different hobby I used to participate in had something similar. Basically it's a mixed box of sticks so you can try different ones without cost, if you like a pair and you want to keep it then simply put a different pair back in its place then move the box on. It operates via PM and a waiting list and each participant pays the shipping to the next person so no one member takes the entire financial burden.

I used to use VF Charlie Watts sig stick for warm up, heavy hitting, etc… and as such always had a relatively new pair in my bag…..

Once this kid came up after a local summer show last year and was spastic about the drums…. He went home with them after showing him a few things to impress his parents with…. This was right after we lost Charlie and I happen to know his parents are Stones fans… he still plays & takes lessons now…

I use the X5A model. I switched from Vaters only because I couldn’t find a match with Vater. Since I’ve had to switch to low volume drumming, I needed something with a bit less shock and the long taper along with extra length makes the pads much easier on the wrists and more true to real drum heads. The Vater nylon tip doesn’t seem to wear out as fast as Vaters either. There was no point in using wood tips on L80s. They would wear to nothing in a week or two tops. I can go three months on the nylon tips. Still falls short of when I wasn‘t using the L80 stick grinders.

I always read the VFs weren’t as hard as Vaters and would break. Haven’t seen that with one pair yet and I’m on my 8th pair. Pretty happy with them. Too bad they cost half as much more per pair.

Well I don't play jazz but I have been using been using Vic Firth American jazz 3 also I think there's a modern jazz 3 that I like a lot. I'm leaning towards the AJ 3 more lately. For quieter rehearsals or gigs I like AJ 5. I think they are similar to 7A but longer. Great for moving quickly and quietly around the kit.

I love the Thomas Lang model. I used them for pad work & if I had a gig where the stage is far from the crowd & I'm not mic'd.
They were very durable & were the only wood tip sticks I've used that didn't split.
The only thing I didn't like it the white paint. They felt WAY too slippery & would chip off during the gig leaving white specks all over the kit & rug.

Now they're just my go-to for pad work. I use Sex Wax for grip and feel the burn!!!🔥
