Okay,
drum roll, please! This is my first forum post ever and I had to do it here, on this great site with all those wonderful yamaha kits! My first real drum hero was the late great Cozy Powell and a Yamaha Recording Kit was my dream kit though his drums were custom made with thicker shells, I think. Over the last 20 years I played different brands but 6 years ago I made my dream come true and started my RC collection.
Specs:
2x 24"x14" Bass Drums
22"x 18" Bass Drum
6" Concert Tom
8" Concert Tom
8"x7" Tom (custom ordered)
10"x 7,5" Tom
12"x 8" Tom
13"x 9" Tom
15"x 13" Tom
18"x 16" Tom
My idea was to tailor my kits for any musical situation, from a small 5-piece to a kind of Neil Peart setup.

@mtd: drooooooooooool. That finish is beautiful.

@Xenobith: Love your Neil by way of RC setup. Can't wait to buy my first set of RCs. Very nice!

Just purchased a new Oak Custom kit this week in Musashi black (8", 10", 12" rack toms, 14" and 16" floor, 22" bass, 5.5x14" snare). I'd been playing on the Stage Customs for 7 years or so, and on a 1986 Tama Swingstar kit for @ 19 years before that. I want to thank you guys for all your opinions as I researched this site quite extensively before making the purchase. I'm new to this forum and really wish I knew about this site a long time ago. Plenty of great information here. Thanks again.

Cool...I was real close to doing the oaks......Welcome!!!!!

why is that Yamaha has hardly any product info on their drums.I cant any information on Custom Advantage Birch. Is it discontinued. I saw one at my local music store for a great price.

You mean the Nouveau lugged Advantage?

That has been discontinued for a while and has become the Stage Custom (full) Birch:

I already posted these pics in the "Show Off Your Yamahas" thread but I thought I'd post them here too. My favorite pics of my kit so far. Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute (1st generation) 8,10,12, & 16 mounted toms with 18x22 kick, COB Supra snare, Hex Rack, DW 9000 pedals, Zildjian K's, Roland SPD-S and Audix mics. These were taken with my phone at Anchor Inn outside of Omaha, NE on the Missouri River on May 21, 2010. Turned out to be a very fun gig.

Anyone interested in a set of Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage 5 Piece??? I'm selling a kit that is only a few months old for $600. Check out eBay seller FCRobstar.

Anyone else out there ever have problems with yammies tom ball mounts?

I have just had my second one go in the last 6 months!

I am a huge proponent of Yams hardware but this thing is annoying me a little.

I bought my SC used in fantastic condition about 3 years ago.

The 2 screws underneath the mount that holds the mount together have popped out!

When I try to rescrew them back in they either overtighten and wont let the ball move to be repositioned etc or they dont seem to catch the thread on the other side of the mount and the ball.

I know I can replace them and they are not that expensive. Its just something that has started to bug me.

Any others suffered this?

I've never personally had one go bad but my guitarist friend who has a Stage Custom kit has had a couple go bad. I think it's because different people are always sitting down at his kit and making adjustments. On mine, I just set them and left them that way. How often are you adjusting things? Do you really tighten them down when you make adjustments?
To fix the broken mounts, just drill right through where the underside bolts won't thread into. Then get longer bolts that will poke out of the top far enough to thread a nut onto. That should fix them. They might look a little better if you push the bolt through the top and put the nut on the bottom side. Am I making sense here? It's so hard to explain things without illustrations.

I never had a issue, but i dont really mess with the ball mount hardly at all,its like set it and forget it...But those things SHOULD last forever........Sounds like alot of overzelious adjusting?????

Not really a massive over adjuster.....

I fiddle now and again - had to make adjustments for gigs- due to space etc....

I also dont really know how well they where treated prior to me....

I think I've been pretty careful with my baby!

I understand what you mean but the longer screw thing-

I will take a look and see if I can make it work.

I just wanted to ask if others had had this issue and appears not- maybe I will go back through my other mounts tonight and losen up a little on them and pay more attention to the amount I adjust etc

If you try the longer bolt fix, take some pics and show us all. I've never actually done it. I'm pretty sure it would work, though.

You need to understand how the YAMAHA ball and socket system works.

If you loosen or take apart any of the three screws underneath the mount you run the risk of dislodging the contact washer... then you'll have either no grip, or a jam up.

You need to take the mount apart, all three screws. What you're gonna see is where the tightening bolt (on top, the one we all love) makes contact with the ball is a flat hexagonal shaped washer (shape of washer is dependent on year of manufacture). The bolt presses on the flat washer which makes contact with the black ball. The washer fits into a recessed space, if the washer is not set perfectly in that space you'll have problems.

You can shake the mount, if it rattles it means the washer is loose in there and you'll have NO grip, if you have a jam, washer is probably wedged somehow.

The washer is concave where it meats the black ball, its critical you make sure on reassembly that it gets replaced correctly. Upon reassembly what you have to do is hold the mount upside down so gravity holds the washer in its recessed place while you tighten the three screws. If you move the holder even the slightest bit, the washer can dislodge.... its kinda tricky. When you replace the three allen head screws on the bottom make sure you have their tiny lock washers on them.

Never disassemble these YAMAHA mounts unless you need to replace a incorrectly worn ball, or reset the washer b/c there's no need to and its more work than its worth.

I always tell YAMAHA hardware owners to loosen the tom mounts 'every time' you move the drums. What you want to do is keep rotating that ball so all 360 degrees get used on the contact point over time, spin it around, reset your tom angles with each new set-up.

The YAMAHA design is unique in that its lets this happen, its not possible with L-Arm type ball and socket mounts.
