Listening to the beginning of the track it sounds like a wind-up mechanical metronome. If you want to play it yourself then any clicky sound will do.

There is a pretty big difference in sound between cross stick (where one end of the stick contacts the head, and your hand adjusts muting of the head) and just hitting a tom hoop. Try it out and see.

If you want to play it yourself then any clicky sound will do.

Agreed. Closest approximation from behind the kit is to gently tap the top of the kick. If the kick is mic'd, that might cause an unpleasant thump in the p.a.
