Default Dennis Davis Groove - Look Back in Anger

Any Bowie fans out there? He had many great drummers, but Dennis Davis stands out as the groove monster. I always loved and wondered about the drum part in this tune, here recently described by producer Tony Visconti, (evidently his favourite Bowie drum track too). In Tony's words - a perfect example of 'busy but doesn't sound busy'.

Great videos!

I've often thought that Dennis Davis may just be the most underrated drummer in history. His work with the likes of Roy Ayers, George Benson and, of course, Stevie Wonder is great. But with Bowie, he was a key ingredient of some of the finest rock records of all time, and yet he's virtually never mentioned. And yet just listen to his playing on "Look Back in Anger" — so good, so energetic, so tight.

I honestly never heard his name before.. there are so many amazing drummers like that. I will say.. i have never touched congas myself.. but that clip of just him playing them isolated is great, so articulate on the accent. Just great to hear.

Always loved the playing on this track.

In fact, I sometimes play along to it on my Roland practice kit.

I read Dennis Davis was influenced by Billy Cobham. You can hear some of that here - the herta fills and hi-hat barks, for example.
