So guys, tomorrow is the big day! Picked up the used Sonor Players kit today along with a new throne, some brushes, a drum store t-shirt (gotta have the shirt), and a few other things to help my little guy on his drumming journey - thanks to everyone, especially the forum member (I think everyone knows who it is) who sent us the sweet cymbals.

I'll post a pic asap with it all set up.

Can't wait!!!!!

Very cool and nice looking kit. Does he know he's getting it and all the extra goodies?
Can't wait for pics!

I second that choice from experience.
I bought a used Sonor Player kit in 2015 and have been gigging with it since, alternating it with a 2013 Ludwig Club Date.

I also love the bass drum size, which has worked out quite well for the smaller footprints- mic'd for larger gigs and un-mic'd for small gigs. The combo tom/cymbal holder is a space saving bonus as well.

I just changed out the stock batter and resonant heads with Remo single plys and the drums sing just fine. I also use an Acrolite for the snare, although for your son, the stock snare should be fine.

Congrats- good value and the kit can be used for a long time going forward.

That kit you got can do a variety of gigs. I like it because I felt so dominant on it. It will be a perfect size kit for your son. And it's good enough to keep into adulthood. The tune safe lugs work really well. Plus, that sparkle wrap is very professional looking, fitting into any situation

That looks fantastic.

I am now inspired to try bass drum mounted cymbals...old school cool!

The guy at the drum store says the previous owner has this mod done for the crash on all his kits. Makes for easy set up and tear down.

For us it was perfect, smaller footprint in living room and one less stand to worry about. I agree, gives it a bit of a vintage feel!

That's beautiful man. Many happy returns.

Your boy must feel like he's on top of the world with that set. Heck I'm a jaded adult, and I still like playing that set. Great choice. Your little guy is set for quite a while now. He is lacking nothing.

Well maybe a cowbell...

That looks great, and it's going to give years of great use! My only "critique" would be to get a rug under that kit! LOL!

On my Gretsch Catalina jazz bop kit I mount my ride the same way as that one is - dog leg off of the kick drum tom bracket. For that setup, I greatly prefer it.

Good job Dad! You set your son up very nicely with a kit that looks great, undoubtedly sounds great, and with cymbals that never need to be upgraded. I know he's going to appreciate it now, but years down the road when he truly knows what's what about drum gear, he's going to appreciate it even more.

Wow Hand Hammered Raw Bell Dry Ride, that was actually one of the first ride cymbals I ever bought. Got it used for a good price and played it for years. That cymbal should last you guys for a long time.

Yes sir! Rug has to be wife approved - getting one this week that is worthy of that set up! When I was sneaking the kit into the house at midnight, I just wanted to get it together with making as little noise as possible, and once I got it all done, I realized the rug was in the other room! I assure you the kit on the wood floor is temporary!

Good stuff! You've got to get the buy-in from the missus! LOL!

I'm still grinning about how great this turned out - you were patient, you did your homework, you got some good advice, (and some great cymbals) and you hooked your son up with a fantastic kit to learn and grow on. No matter what happens in the future or how many other kits he may wind up with, I bet he always keeps this one.

I couldn't agree more with these sentiments. Great end to a thread. That kit will last him a long time. I love all your efforts to surprise him-kudos to job well done. And this thread inspirational too-I really like the bass drum cymbal mount -the Sonor Safari just has a single tom but I'm sure that double post would fit. Now to find one and upgrade my kit.

FWIW, I used that ride cymbal as my main ride for at least 5 years. It's seen quite a few gigs.

So hopefully it has some good juju that rode along with the cymbal see what I did there :)

That mod looks like a floor tom bracket. Nice mod.
