also, somebody mentioned Steve Gorman from the Black Crowes. Frantastic drummer. I second that.

Oftentimes drummers go unnoticed because their band's music doesn't have room for flashy drum parts. One guy I'd like to mention who I think always sounds and plays aweome is James Gadson. Always great.

Ace drummer. And recently wrote a great autobiography.

I can't say if he is under-rated, but my favorite drumming discovery since I joined the DW forum is probably Sonny Emory. I never hear anybody here talk about him, but the guy is a monster player in my book.

Jon has kept the same job for 35 years. I don't think that makes him underrated.

What I am saying is that, what he has to do to make the parody of the different flavors of songs to have the same feel and groove as the original is not easy. Other people, especially young musicians do not take what Jon does in Weird Al as serious. All they care about are chops and speed. That’s all I am trying to say. I know he does other work outside of Weird Al and does studio work as well. I also like his Concert Drum site (bermudaschwartz.com/concerttoms/index.html ). I do not mean any disrespect to anyone especially to Jon.

Terry Bozzio related a story where he was scared of Sonny Emory! He was doing one of his first clinics, but Sonny went first. Terry did not feel confident on his first time out following him!

Cool story. Sonny is a formidable drummer for any other drummer trying to stack up to him. Bozzio sure isn't no slouch himself.

Ronnie Tutt - I searched a bit on this thread but couldn't see his name. Apologies if someone else has mentioned him. I figure the lead singer in his band from 1969 - 1977 stole the limelight.
Cheers

I think the most underrated drumer tittle goes for Camel Prog band drummer Andy Ward, man i just love how he plays that heavy 5/8 time signature on "Lunar Sea". "Lady Fantasy" would be other key track of him.

Funny you should mention him, lately I've been listening to Camel for the first time in ages. Andy is a great drummer, he has a way to make odd time signatures flow.

Sonny Emory is nothing but fabulous, I just stumbled up on him on a video a few weeks ago never heard of him. Then I searched for a few more and I was speechless. I can at least half ass follow along with most notable drummers, but I dont think I would be worthy of picking this guys stick up if he dropped it. Anyone not familiar with him it is worth your time. I cant explain this but when I heard him play I got discouraged, It took me back to a time when I was a kid playing on coffee cans and thinking Ill never get this.

BJ Wilson.

I recently transcribed the drum part from Time Warp (Rocky Horror Picture Show), and was blown away by the subtlety of the drumming.

See thread I created in 'Drummers' section for more.

Brendan Canty from Fugazi and Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth. Both raw, aggressive, and have a lot of interesting feels, esp. Brendan Canty.

I sure as hell don't underrate him. Fugazi in general could be more well-known for how amazing it is, but Brendan kicked the llama's ass.

Look at it this way...he was on TOTP's nearly every week in the early 80's playing with a number of chart hitting acts.

Camel is one of my favorite bands! Andy Ward was quite good. I like the sounds of his kit back in the day. Peace and goodwill.

I find strange people saying Sonny Emory is underrated, since Sonny was ALREADY very well known 30 years ago, did tons of clinics, played with Earth Wind and Fire for years, etc.

Underated would be someone completly unknown to guys of the forum, someone who is as good as the best drummers in the world, at least to me...

Kenwood Dennard.. I had not heard of him til i listened to this album, which i now listen to at least once a week and the guy is just all groove and knows how to really turn it up when needed without getting in the way. his credits are pretty impressive but i don't think i have ever seen him mentioned anywhere..

Kenwood is a very wellknown drummer since the 70īs. Already played for Brand X back then, most likely introduced by Phil Collins (then drummer) to the band...has several tuition DVDs, is a current teacher at Berklee since long, etc...

The thing is if you havenīt heard of him does not mean is not well known. For example, I donīt know any matematician of the XXI century (and hardly any century), that doesnīt mean that there are no wellknown ones...or matematicians...

EVEN HAS A PAGE AT DRUMMERWORLD: http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers...d_Dennard.html

Jay Postones of TesseracT. Unbelievable groove and technical ability - no formal training, self taught.

No problem, just think I lived in Argentina in the 70Ļs (NO VHS, no internet, no nothing...) and he was ALREADY wellknown back then...

Same goes with Sonny Emory and a lot of other mentioned, he also has a page at DRUMMERWORLD: http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Sonny_Emory.html

As you see (from the photo above) we were playing together in the 80Ļs in drum clinics all over the world.

I think for talking about underrated drummers the conversation would be more apropiate in terms on LOCAL drummers that never recorded with wellknown people and mostly stayed local, in US and specially in other countries.

Anyway, itīs just an idea...

Best regards!

Id say our very own Alex. Have you seen the company he's kept? Have you payed attention to his experiences and shared wisdom? Sure he seems a bit salty at times, who cares....I say he's under-rated! Boom

I was looking through this thread to see if anyone had mentioned BJ Wilson. The single most unorthodox set up.....he literally sat on the floor and at times played side on to his kit. But his technical facility and sheer speed is astonishing.
