What makes a great drummer?

Seems like there's an anti-chops bias on this forum. Of course a "great" drummer needs good feel and timing and to play what's right for the song. But most drummers that really make the cut into greatness found themselves gigs where it was appropriate to show off their awesome chops (often prog or fusion). Guys that do boring stuff well, when it is exactly what is called for, are doing their job but it doesn't make them great.

IMO ;)

I think its more of a semi-good natured trolling.

Each of the discussions turns into "its not chops OR groove...its both ...and more".

If YOU think a drummer is great, then he or she is, If you dont think a drummer
is great then they are not. Simple.
