Ok, so after 3 years of being away from my favorite community... I'm back! Now that that is out of the way, I have a question.
Scenario: I'm starting to build drums myself. I finally have most of the gear to take raw drum shells and turn them into something beautiful and unique both visually and acoustically. The set I want to build is inspired by Adam Deitch's second set in the Modern Drummer Festival 2010. The really small, simple, but amazing sounding set that was on his left and he only played for like 45 seconds. The specs are going to be 6", 10", 14" toms with a 18" bass drum and a 12" snare. The depths are still up in there air, but will probably be more on the shorter side. I'm going with 6 plys all around except for the bass which will be 8 ply. Problem: I want to build this set out of birch due to the generally equalized highs, mids, and lows that are natural to birch shells. It's a good all around mix. However, I cannot find a custom drum supplier anywhere in the U.S. that offers birch shells. Everyone only wants to offer the "Keller VSS Maple" shells. The Keller's are great shells, just not what I want on this kit.
Does anyone know of a drum supplier, preferably U.S. but I might consider U.K., that supplies birch shells to custom sizing?
My only other thought is to scour ebay for shells that match my desires, strip them down and go from there. But that is an absolute last resort.
