This past week I've been attending summer workshops classes set up by Berklee. Casey Scheuerell has been the drum instructor and he's been teaching us a lot of amazing stuff. Here's a clip of him talking about and playing uptempo hihat:

I saw Casey at a PASIC around 1985/1986 and he blew me away.
 
Proof that I'm old -- lol -- when I first started playing this was considered standard hi hat playing. Also, being a fan of buddy, Gene, Jo Jones and Max (who ALL did that) it got developed into my consciousness. Years later, guys would be like ; "What the hell is THAT?"

Truthfully though, it's something that can only be applied to swing style when the band comes down and you want to drive it without getting too loud. (Great for intros) At least, that's all I've used it for. The underhand placement is too weak for most contemporary styles, but perfect for subtle accents. Then again, rules are meant to be broken.
