off the top of your head...

your top five favorite jazz records ....don't think too deeply about it...just records that stick in your mind ....and please mention the drummer who plays on it

just would love to see everyones opinion and maybe pick up a few that I have not heard

I'm on a vinyl collecting kick and always love adding to my jazz record collection

my off the top of my head 5 of the moment .......in no particular order...I want to do top 20 but thats ridiculous

Miles Davis - Miles in the sky - Tony Williams
McCoy Tyner - Reaching Fourth - Roy Haynes
McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy - Elvin Jones
Wayne Shorter - JUJU- Elvin Jones
Joe Henderson - Inner Urge - Elvin Jones

yeah I'm a little Elvin biased...so what :)

...you go .....

Miles Davis - Four and More (Tony Williams) --- All time continual mind-blowing experience
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (Jimmy Cobb) --- My first jazz record and of course ultimate classic
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (Elvin Jones) --- Elvin is incredible and "Resolution" always gets stuck in my head
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil (Elvin Jones) --- More awesomeness from Elvin
Jazz Legacy - Live In New York (Steve Smith) --- One of the greatest Bebop recordings ever, if you ask me.

Very close runners up:

Buddy Rich Big Band - The New One --- as an album, the "curve" of energy and the mood (I guess you would call that pacing) is excellent, and of course so is Buddy
Miles Davis - Milestones (Philly Joe Jones) --- Swingin'!

I'm excited about this thread. Can anyone point me to some good modern stuff, maybe featuring Brian Blade or Eric Harland?

Here's mine, not jazz classics as such, a bit more modern :)

Peter Erskine - Motion Poet (err... Peter Erskine)

Hiromi - Voice (Simon Phillips)

Dave Grusin - Mountain Dance (Harvey Mason)

Chick Corea - Akoustic Band (Dave Weckl)

Special EFX - Double Feature (Omar Hakim & Dave Weckl)

wow guys....all great entries so far.....

NerfLad you just named some records that are very close to my heart

Henri I have not heard a couple of those and will definitely be doing some listening

Harvey was a teacher of mine and I have not heard that record ......Im ashamed :)

Tsk, you lot! No Art Blakey?

Been listening to his A Night in Tunisia and Moanin' a lot this last week or so

FWIW, Steve Smith plays both of those tunes on the Jazz Legacy record I mentioned. You must check out that record. They absolutely tear the place down.

I guess I'll go ahead and add Dave Weckl - Multiplicity since Mad threw out some other stuff with Dave on it.

not really basing this on what drummer is on the record

I absolutely love Blakey.....huge inspiration for me

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (Jimmy Cobb)
Miles Davis - Four and More + My Funny Valentine (Tony Williams)
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Free For All (Art Blakey)
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Collosus (Max Roach)
Chick Corea - Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (Roy Haynes)

Okay, that was impossible. A list smaller than 20 is almost random selection for me. But you asked, so I complied. :)

I know its tough....I could make 10 top 5 lists.....

just looking to see what you guys would include

wait 20 minutes and make another top 5 as your alter ego :)

It's sooooo hard to to choose only 5. I cheated by including box sets in a couple cases.

In no order:

- The Complete Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong on Verve (Louie Bellson / Buddy Rich)
- Wayne Shorter Speak No Evil (Elvin)
- Art Blakey - A Night At Birdland Vol 1.
- Wynton Marsalis Live at the Village Vanguard [Box set] - Herlin Riley
- John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (Elvin)

How can I slip in others...
My Funny Valentine / Four & More Concert - Tony
Wynton Marsalis's Live At Blues Alley with Jeff Watts.
Pat Metheny 80/81 (Jack DeJohnette)
A million more Elvin
A million Steve Gadd

Top 5 jazz drummer albums? Are these what are considered the best music or the best drumming?

Anyway, can't go wrong with --

Four and More -- Tony

Now he sings -- Roy

Cresent -- Trane with Elvin

Swinging New Big Band -- Buddy

Toss up between anything with Joe Morello or anything with Philly Jo Jones.

I'll just go with five albums that I'm loving right now.

Moanin - Art Blakey & the jazz messengers (Art Blakey)
Four & More - Miles Davis group (Tony Williams, probably best jazz album ever?)
Bert's Playground - Ari Hoenig group (Ari Hoenig, insane version of Moment's Notice on this one)
Perceptual - Brian Blade Fellowship (Brian Blade)
The Real Mccoy - Mccoy Tyner group (Elvin Jones)

I was going for just albums you love....and wanted to know what drummer played on it but not necessarily opinions based on the drumming

for example I love Miles Blue Moods ...Elvin is on it but its not really typical Elvin and not particularly a mind blowing drum album....just perfect music

and all of your selections are amazing

ahhhhh Big Swing Face.....great record!!!!

I was more into fusion than jazz, which is something I'm enjoying more with age, by which time I've been listening more to web clips than albums ... so these are just the ones that stood out in my old LP and CD collections:

Birds of Fire - Mahavishnu - Billy C
- powerful, majestic, intense, magical

Black Market - Weather Report - Narada and Chester Thompson (or Heavy Weather - I like them the same)
- fantastic grooves, melodies, sounds and textures with some steaming hot moments

Return to Forever (eponymous) - Airto
- beautiful, breezy, nimble and some of my favourite drumming ever

Mingus - Joni Mitchell - Don Alias (with Jaco!)
- haunting, beautiful, sophisticated, inspired

A Love Supreme - Trane - Elvin (the of the few full albums I've listened to on YouTube)
- haunting, esoteric, beautiful, wild

Best of Dave Brubeck w/- Joe Morello
- innovative, clever, fun, tasty

Good thread. Lots of goodies to check out.
