Amazing Duos

LEE MICHAELS: Lee on Lead Vocals/Hammond Organ with 'Frosty' (Bartholomew Eugene Smith-Frost) on drums

In one of the rare Led Zep interviews with Circus magazine, Bonham cites 'Frosty' as one of his favorite drummers.

Listen to Frosty's solo: Some REALLY interesting stuff going on in Part 1 starting @ 2:46...Chimes/bells/whatnot @4:27 and a REALLY fast single pedal foot...incredible for such a large man and the simple 'Old School' kit set up of the day. Back then we neither had the ubiquitous 'double pedal,' "triggering" lol...nor digital recording. It was all analog. 1/2"-3/4" tape machines for the most part, then onto the vinyl. Just the way we did it back then.

Part 2: With some neat graphics/fills..Remind you of Emmerson. Lake and Palmer? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX9uGX2bBv4&feature=related

You can see the big man here in some really incredible shots.

Death From Above 1979 (Distorted bass and drums)

Oh man, what a letdown. I thought the duo was FROM 79'. I was expecting some cool classic rock and I get some clammy hipster duo.

I was hesitant to start my current band with just the drums/piano lineup until I heard the Dresden Dolls. We did end up adding a horn player later but we gigged for a little while as a duo.

Great thread dude. I stumbled on this duo from TX called The Musicianers.

A few jazz/improv duos off the top of my head:

William Parker and Hamid Drake - First Communion/Piercing the Veil
John Coltrane and Rashied Ali - Interstellar Space
Derek Bailey and Jamie Muir - Dart Drug

Ruins (Japan) - they're freakin' awesome.

In the 1980s, Bill Bruford did a duo album with Patrick Moraz - drums and acoustic piano, kinda' put me to sleep, but the first track was good. Then someone gave me a two CD set of Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach live in Europe somewhere. Two CD's of drumset and trumpet! I'm not sure what the producers were thinking on that one.

One of the best duets I ever heard was on the Jaco Pastorius big band album Invitation, where Jaco and Toots Theilemans (harmonica) played Sophisticated Lady. Inspiring.

Another inspiring album was bassist/stickist Tony Levin's first solo album, where he dragged around an ADAT recorder while he was on a world tour, and he would call his favorite players and have them come over to his hotel room and record something spontaneous. That entire CD is pretty cool.

In the late 40s, Arthur Crudup recorded a lot of sides that were just guitar and drums. Pretty cool brush work on a lot of those tracks - not the typical tap and swish be-bop thing.

That's Your Red Wagon is my favourite as far as the drumming goes. Couldn't find it on yootoob, but the above will do...
