Opinions needed on recording technique/equipment in my garage (with audio files)

Hi all,

I'm green in home recording. I used to just use a Zoom Q3HD to record my own practice. I've recently acquired a pair of AKG P170 mics (as part of their Groove Pack). I'm trying out a mic configuration similar to Recorderman. I made sure snare was equidistant from the 2 mics to have phase integrity.

Here is the result from the AKG P170s:

I've also set up the Q3HD about 6ft at the left front of the drum set (from the drummer's perspective). Here is the Q3HD file:

The immediate thing noticeable in the AKG version is the snare sounds boxier, missing the bright overtones. Another thing is, between 0:40s and 0:50s, the bell sounds very dry, missing the "ring".

Overall, the Q3HD version comes closer to what it sounds like at the front of the kit.

So, the question is, why did I get poorer result with the AKG P170s?

Is it a character of the P170?

Or is it because of closer miking which picked up less of the rings from the room?

What should I do to get better result?

Opinions appreciated.

p.s. Sorry, not the most brilliant playing. LOL
