Trying something new

... To this day, I still set my kit up backwards once in a while just to get some new synapses firing. I don't play well enough that way to play out, but it seems a worthwhile and interesting rehearsal practice.

I always find it interesting that making very small changes to your setup affects how it FEELS to play.

True. Nice to be more conscious of the physical sensation of playing.

I used to have a jazz band instructor who told us we needed to play with a certain amount of 'grease'. Probably meant we didn't eat enough soul food, like fried chicken or gumbo, I don't know. I think he was probably partially right. We were so clinical and sterile in college you forget why you play music - mainly to have a good time. And if it feels good, it is good. Maybe instead of watching Victor vids you just need to eat more soul food ;)

Fair comment, Bo. I read the other day about a player who said he never has an agenda when he plays. He just plays the music. Can't remember who it was but I do remember that his playing felt good.

Still wanna do the Wootten exercises, though :)
