Another controversial Mortnoy story?

Seems to be an issue with attaching pictures on the forum right now but the story is that Mike Portnoy (acting as musical director) took Virgil Donati and Bunny Brunel off the bill at the benefit concert for Tony Macalpine.

For those that don't know Tony Macalpine is a guitarist from Planet X and Cab, and he's battling cancer right now. He has a long history with Virgil and Bunny. Will try and attach the screenshot when the forum is fixed.

When were they ON the bill?

Advertising only ever listed Portnoy as the drummer for the event.

I was going to go, but tickets were $80, and that wasn't in the budget.

Well it seems as though they were led to believe they would be playing and someone put a stop to that.

From what I can gather, it looks like they wanted to play, yeah, but this information says nothing about whether or not they were actually ON the bill, as previously mentioned.

That being said, if Portnoy is running the show, then so be it. He can do whatever he wants.

I dunno man, if Bunny is a reasonable person himself then I would take it that he was led to believe they would be playing and then the opportunity was taken away.

Sorry for the crap thread. I probably made it because I think MP is a bit of a tosser lol

All the advertising from day 1 was the line up was Porntoy on drums, Billy Sheehan on bass, Derek Sherinian on keys, Zack Wylde on guitar, with special guest Steve Vai on guitar, plus a set from John 5 (and I assume his solo band).

plus in the fine print, it listed 3 additional guitar players, Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencort, Richie Kotzen.

And this event was planned out months in advance.

There never a mention of special guest drummers, or special guest bass players, no mention of Virgil, Bunny, or anyone else.

Someone posting on the day of the event they can't add themselves to the bill at the very last minute is pretty lame on their part.

Plus, if time was already allotted to all the players on the bill, there may not have been time in the night to just add more people.

Portnoy's ego may be out there and he says stupid stuff, but slamming him for not doing something he never said he was going to do with silly.

And players whining they can't play at a charity event they weren't advertised to be at, and trying to cast a controversy over what is supposed to be a charity event is just flipping lame.

Even if they were told they could show up and had the rug pulled on them at the last minute, shut up about it. Keep it to yourself. The night was supposed to be about Tony, not them.

Agreed. Portnoy can be a bit of a tool at times, but if you were never advertised to be playing, keep your mouth shut and go to the event to support your friend instead of whining about how you can't play at the event. The event is about Tony MacAlpine, not about Bunny Brunel, Virgil Donati or any background BS that may or may not have been agreed upon with Mike Portnoy.

MacAlpine is a really damn good guitarist. I have seen him a couple times touring with Steve Vai and he can hang with the Little Italian Virtuoso no problem.
