How do drummers get sponsored?

It's a long way from the 80's even early 90's where there were guys playing in big bands who couldn't get en endorsement to save their lives because manufactures wouldn't give deals to anyone they felt was a one hit wonder or wasn't established enough.

That was the backlash from the '60s and '70s where companies set up deals with almost everyone who had their first hit on the radio. It took a few years (and some economic lessons) to understand that when a drummer/band has a short shelf life, so does their marketing value. And it has pretty much remained that way.

I wonder at what point everyone will regard endorsements strictly as paying customer agreements, and what will happen when a player with excellent marketing value decides he shouldn't have to pay for his gear? :)
