The Painted Seamless Aluminum 12,15,20 - OFFICIAL REVIEW

The back-story: So as many of you know, and saw in the original kit video we shot awhile back, I was lucky enough to be the first guy to ever have the privilege of playing/owning one of these seamless aluminum kits. I had been journeying with Vukan as an Oriollo artist for awhile, and we had many discussions about the seamless aluminum kit during its development. Actually receiving it and being able to use it on gigs and make a video to show everyone what it sounded like was a very rewarding thing for me. The feedback on the kit was fantastic. Fast forward about six months, and Vukan and I started talking about me going to Summer NAMM and being a representative for Oriollo. I was thrilled with the idea, and began discussing the idea of him making me a smaller kit to complement my standard sized kit that I could display at NAMM.

Arrival/Unboxing: Often, when I purchase drums from Vukan, I purchase the shells with lugs, and then finish them out from my own hardware stash. I did this with this kit as well. I received all three shells in one well packed box. The shipping time from Serbia on all the latest items Vukan has sent me has been around 10 tens from ship to arrival, so that has been great.

How it's made: This phantom kit is in the oriphonic layout. This means the shells have a flanged edge on batter side, and an inner 45 on the reso side. These shells start at varying thicknesses, depending on the size of the drum. The 12 and 15 start at 2mm and the bass drum at 3mm. Like the first kit, these drums are SUPER light. The toms are even lighter than the first kit, which is saying something. For this kit, I chose to finish out the shells with 2.3 triple flanged hoops. I am currently using the rack tom in a snare stand, but am contemplating installing a rail mount. For the floor tom I decided to use the gibraltar multi-clamps to mount floor tom legs to it. The main reason i did this, was because the mounts I installed on the previous kit, the maxwell repo Gretsch mount, I absolutely hate. Visually they are great, but the legs tend to rattle occasionally, which is annoying. I chose the clamp mounts as a solution until I decide if I want to install actual mounts, and which ones I want to use if I do. That being said, the clamp mounts are rock solid and have been a dream to use.

In a very similar manner, I am using the DW clip on spurs on this kit…but like the clamps, these offer rock solid performance…so I don’t see an issue with it. I also like that its less hardware drilled to the shell. For the bass drum, I used standard wood hoops, and some vintage slingerland t’s and claws to give it that vintage vibe. I should probably note at this point, that with my kits I post, there is obviously variances between hardware choices when compared to the fully completed kits Vukan is sending out. All his kits are using the same hardware and mounts…and what he is using would be easily seen on his Facebook or instagram.

One thing that is different from the original kit is that this kit is a painted kit. Vukan is a paint wizard and I don’t know how he does some of the crazy finishes I have seen, but for this kit…I pitched the idea of trying to recreate or pay homage to the vintage mardi gras pearl finish. That is my favorite drum finish, and I wanted to see what Vukan created, with that finish as his inspiration. The result is the galaxy splatter finish, and I think its amazing. It was obviously a hit, because multiple people have ordered it since we showed off my drums. The finish, like my other snares, is a matte finish. This might not be the best option for everyone, as it is a bit more fragile than a wrap or lacquer…but the good thing is Vukan offers a lacquered option as well that looks fantastic…so the choice is yours.

The Sound: I am officially the broken record of the forum, because any time I get the chance to brag on these kits, I do it. The sound is that good. Never have I had a kit I have been so satisfied with the sound. It constantly is impressing me with how it reacts when I throw something at it musically. It seems to always impress sound guys and musicians. Its so musical, but powerful. The tone is something really special. What is cool to me, is that this 12,15,20 configuration has its own little thing going on…and I love it. Its a perfect complement to the larger kit. The tone of this kit is a little different. It’s a little tighter and more toneful…a little more focused…but equally beefy and powerful. I really love the way it records. Its very clean and gets amazing tone in the studio.

Summing it up: I am super happy with this kit. From the unique finish, to the complementing sound…it was exactly what I was hoping for. Vukan really knocked it out of the park. I can brag on these drums all day, but it’s been so awesome to see other forum members purchasing the kits and raving about how great they sound. It was really fun watching peoples jaws hit the floor every time they hit the kit for the first time at NAMM. Of course I am a little biased, but it would seem based off the feedback I am getting, that despite being a fan, these drums live up to the hype…which is a very cool thing to be a part of.

Very nice! Bearing edge and inside pics?

I don't have any close ups on hand...I can take some but I do have these. Kind of shows it.

As much as I love the SOUND of Oriollo drums, I have to say, the LOOK is absolutely stunning. Which is hard for me to admit, given how biased I am against painting drums.
