Today's wake 'n break is a slick groove for cross stick, bass drum, hi-hats, and floor tom. :) Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&", the "e" and "a" of 2, the "&" of 3, and on the "e" of 4. Next, our hi-hats are falling on "1e&a", the "e" and "a" of 2, the "&a" of 3, and on the "e&" of 4, with open notes on the "a" of 1 and on the "a" of 2. Moving along to the cross stick, we have notes falling on 2, the "e" of 3, and on 4 and the "a" of 4. Last but not least, we have a single floor tom note falling on the "&" of 2. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday! There's nothing quite like your dog having explosive diarrhea to have you running late. 😬 Anyway, today's wake 'n break is a two bar linear groove in 6/8 that is broken up between the bass drum, hi-hats, cross stick, another stick, snare drum, and floor tom. I sometimes call grooves such as this one a "ba-boom" groove, referring to the bass drum pattern. Taking our bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and 6 in both bars. Next, our hi-hats are being chicked on 2 in both bars. Moving along to the cross stick on the snare rim, we have notes falling on 3 in both bars. Next, we are striking the stick that is resting on the rim of the snare drum, which falls on the 4 of each bar. Now we come to the floor tom, where we have a single note on 5 in the first bar. Last but not least, we have a snare drum falling on 5 in the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Top of the morning to you! :) Today's wake 'n break is a hybrid of Afrobeat and a one drop reggae feel (it's important to note that this groove is not a one drop). Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 2 and 4. Next, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "&'s" and we have stricken notes on "1&2&3&" with a short opening on the "e" of 3. Last but not least, we come to the snare drum, which actually starts with a pickup on the "a" of 4. We then have notes on "1e&a", the "a" of 2, on the "&a" of 3, and on the "a" of 4. It's easy to lose the "1" on this groove because our ears naturally want to hear the bass drum on 1 and 3 (which is a hip groove as well!). As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a sixteenth note backbeat that utilizes a mounted tambourine. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, 2, and on "3&". Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes falling on "1e&", "2e&", and on "4e&", with openings on the "&" of 1, the "&" of 2, and on the "&" of 4. Moving along to the snare drum, we have accented notes on 2 and 4. Last but not least, our tambourine is falling on the "a" of 2, and on "3e&a", starting towards the middle of the tambourine and moving outwards towards the frame. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Today's wake 'n break is a spacious and wide open two bar groove with short anticipated hi-hat openings. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 in the first bar and then on "1&", 2, and on the "&" of 4 in the second bar. Next, our hi-hats have short open notes on the "&" of 1 and on the "&" of 3 in both bars. Moving along to the snare drum, we have notes falling on 3 and on "4e&a" in the first bar, and then on 3 in the second bar. Last but not least, our floor tom is falling on the "&" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🥁 Today's wake 'n break is a four on the floor groove utilizing two sets of hi-hats to play sixteenth note triplets (counting: "1 trip let & trip let"). Taking the bass drum first, we have our steady quarter note pulse on 1, 2, 3, and 4. Next, our snare drum has a single accented note on the "&" of 4. Moving along to our auxiliary set of hi-hats, we have notes falling on the first and second "let" of 1, the first and second "let" of 2, and on the first and second "let" of 3. Last but not least, our main set of hi-hats has notes falling on the "&" and second "trip" of 1, the "&" and second "trip" of 2, and on the "&" and second "trip" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

It's just another manic Monday! :) Today's wake 'n break is built on top of what I refer to as a "boom chick" foot ostinato and features anticipated notes on the tamborica. Taking our foot ostinato first, our bass drum is falling on "1&" and on "3&". Meanwhile, our hi-hats are being chicked on "2&" and on "4&". Next, our snare drum is falling on "1e&" and on "3e&". Moving along to the high tom, we have notes falling on "2e&" and on "4e". Last but not least, our tamborica has notes falling on the "a" of each beat. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Today's wake 'n break is a dual hi-hat groove with staggered triplets played between them. Since I'm using both feet for hi-hats, I am striking the bass drum with a stick. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and on the "e" of 2. Next, we come to the hi-hats. Throughout this video, the hi-hat pattern changes slightly, but I'm going to break down the last pattern in the groove because it's the one I like the best. We have sixteenth note triplets (counting: "1 trip let & trip let"), which then break down into eighth note triplets (counting: "1 trip let") and then eighth notes. Looking at the auxiliary hats first, we have notes falling on "1&", the second "let" of 1, followed by a note on the "trip" of 2, another on 3, and finally on 4. Next, our main set of hi-hats are falling on the second "trip" of 1, the "let" of 2, the "&" of 3, and on the "&" of 4. Last but not least, our snare drum is providing a backbeat on 2 and 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is built around our bass drum and hi-hats falling in unison and features a short burst of 32nd notes on the snare drum (I can definitely stand to tighten them up a bit). Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&", the "e" and "a" of 2, and on the "e" of 3. Next, our hi-hats are falling in unison with the bass drum, with an open note played on the "a" of 3. Last but not least, we come to the snare drum where we have notes falling on 2, the "a" of 3, followed by a short burst of 32nd notes starting on the "e" of 4 and ending on 1. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Today's wake 'n break is a two bar groove that is quasi-linear, meaning that there are very few notes falling in unison.
Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, and on 3 and the "a" of 3 in both bars. Looking at our hi-hats next, we have notes falling on the "e" of 1 and on the "e" of 3 with open notes on 2 and 4, and this also remains constant throughout both bars. Next, our snare drum has ghost notes on the "&" of 1 and on the "&" of 3 in both bars, while we have accented notes on 2 and 4 in both bars. Last but not least, we have accented notes falling on "4e" and on the "a" of 4 in the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Today's wake 'n break is a 6/4 groove with hi-hats on the upbeats and it utilizes a single caxixi shaker. Taking the caxixi first, we have a steady slew of sixteenth notes on "1e&a, 2e&a, 3e&a, 4e&a". Looking at the bass drum next, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "e&" of 2, on 3 and the "a" of 3, on 4 and the "a" of 4, and on the "a" of 6. Moving along to the snare drum, we have accented notes on the "a" of 2 and on 6, as well as ghost notes on the "e&a" of 5. Last but not least, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "&'s", which provides the groove with its swing. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Thank goodness it's Friday! :) Today's wake 'n break is a hand to hand hi-hat groove in 3/4 with a steady bass drum pattern. I think that this groove can be felt as a 6/8 groove as well, but I personally feel it in 3/4. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 1, the "&" of 2, and on the "e" of 3. Next, our hi-hats are falling on "1e&", the "a" of 2, and on 3. Last but not least, our snare drum has a single note falling on 2. As always, I hope you dig it and that everyone has a great weekend!

Today's wake 'n break is inspired by the Purdie shuffle, as well as Bonham's "Fool In The Rain" and Porcaro's "Roseanna" shuffles. I'll be breaking this groove down into sixteenth note triplets (counting: 1 trip let & trip let). Starting with the ride cymbal, we have notes falling on each downbeat as well as the first "let" of each beat, the "&" of each beat, and on the second "let" of each beat. Next, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as ghost notes on the first "trip" of 1, the second "trip" and "let" of 1, the second "trip" of 2, the first and second "trip" of 3, and on the second "trip" of 4. Moving along to the bass drum, we have notes falling on 1 and on the first and second "let" of 3. Last but not least, are hi-hats are keeping an eighth note pulse. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Today's wake 'n break is kind of funky break that could work great in either a funk or rock setting. Looking at our feet first, the bass drum is falling on "1&" while our hi-hats are being chicked on 1, 2, 3, and 4. Next, our ride bell is falling on 1 and the "&a" of 1, the "&" of 2, and on the "&" of 4. Happy Humpday! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a laid back tom and cross stick groove on top of a "boom chick" foot ostinato. Taking our feet first, our bass drum is falling on 1 and 3 while our hi-hat is falling on 2 and 4. Next, our snare drum (with dropped wires) has a cross stick falling on the "&" of 1 and on the "&" of 3. We also have open tones falling on the "e" of 1, the "&a" of 2, the "e" of 3, and on the "&a" of 4, as well as closed tones on the "a" of 1, on 2, the "a" of 3, and on 4. Last but not least, we have anticipated tom notes on the "e" of 2 and on the "e" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Today's wake 'n break is a one drop groove that is shuffled similarly to the famous "Purdie Shuffle". Taking the hi-hats first, we have notes falling 1 and the "let" of 1, 2 and the "let" of 2, 3 and the "let" of 3, and on 4 and the "let" of 4. We also have "chicked" notes on 2 and 4. Next, our snare drum has ghost notes on the "trip" of 1, the "trip" of 2, and on the "trip" of 4, with a single accented note on 3. Last but not least, our bass drum is falling in unison with the snare accent on 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Thank goodness it's Friday! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar tom groove in 6/8 that utilizes two sets of spoons on the drums. It can also be felt as triplet groove in 4/4 but I feel it in 6/8. Taking the bass drum, we have notes falling on 1 and 5 in the first bar and on 3 in the second bar. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are falling on 3 in the first bar and on 1 and 5 in the second bar. Moving along to the snare drum (with dropped wires), we have notes falling on "1&2&3&4&5&" in both bars, which are being played as flam taps. Last but not least, our high tom is falling on the "&" of 5 in both bars. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Today's wake 'n break is a polyrhythmic waltz that voices the polyrhythm of two against three. :) Taking our feet first, we have the traditional waltz ostinato with the bass drum falling on 1 and the hi-hats falling on 2 and 3. Next, our high tom is falling on 1 and on the "&" of 2. Last but not least, our snare drum has an accented note on 3 as well as ghost notes on the "&" of 1, on 2, and on the "&" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

It's Easter Drumday! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar halftime backbeat with open hi-hat notes on all of the downbeats. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 1, and on the "&" of 4 in the first bar, followed by notes on the "e" of 1 and on 2 in the second bar. It's just another manic Monday, folks! Today's wake 'n break is two bar groove that utilizes two sets of hi-hats as well as a cowbell mounted on the rod of the auxiliary hi-hat stand. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on the "e" and "a" of 1, the "e" and "a" of 2, and on "3e" and the "a" of 3 in the first bar. In the second bar, we have note bass drum notes. Next, our main set of hi-hats are falling in unison with the bass drum in the first bar with an open note on the "&" of 4, and in the second bar, we have chicks on "1&2&3&4&" as well as an open note on the "e" of 2. Next, our cowbell is being struck on "1&2&3&4&" in the second bar, as well as chicked cowbell notes on all of the "e's" and "a's". Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4 throughout both bars. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Today's wake 'n break is a backbeat where the last snare accent is slightly displaced with a short sixteenth note triplet (counted: 1 trip let & trip let) lick played between the bass drum, hi-hat, and snare drum. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 2 and on the second "trip" of 3. Next, our hi-hats are being struck on "1, 2, 3, 4" as well as chicked on all of the upbeats or "&'s". Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on 2 and on the second "let" of 3. I'm in a rush today so I hope I didn't make any mistakes in this breakdown. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday! 🐪 Since my hi-hat stand is currently loaded up for a gig, I decided to have fun with my tamborica again. Today's groove is a sixteenth note triplet (counting: 1 trip let & trip let) backbeat with ghosted notes on the tamborica. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&", on 3, and the second "let" of 3. Next, our tamborica is falling on the "trip" and "let" of each beat, as well as on the second "trip" and "let" of each beat. Moving along to the ride, we have crashed notes on "1&". Next, our snare drum is providing the backbeat on 2 and 4. Last but not least, our high tom is falling on the "&" of 2 and on the "&" of 3 while our floor tom is falling on 3. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Today's wake 'n break once again utilizes my foot activated tamborica in place of my hi-hats since they're still packed up for a gig. Taking the shell of the bass drum first, we have a steady slew of sixteenth notes falling on "1e&a, 2e&a, 3e&a, 4e&a". Next, our bass drum has anticipated notes falling on the "e" and "a" of 1, the "e" of 2, the "e" and "a" of 3, and on the "e" of 4. Moving along to the tamborica, we have notes falling on all of the upbeats or "&'s", which provides the groove with a touch of swing. Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on 2, the "a" of 2, on 4, and finally on the "a" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Thank goodness it's Friday! :) Today's wake 'n break is a double stroked samba groove utilizing brushes on a set of three pandieros. Taking the middle pandeiro first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, 2 and the "a" of 2, on 3, and on the "a" of 4. Next, the left pandeiro is falling on the "e&" of 1, the "e&" of 2, and on the "e&" of 3. Last but not least, the fight pandeiro is falling on the "a" of 3 and on 4. I think I may revisit this setup tomorrow, tuning the pandeiros to different pitch, but you never know. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

After watching "That Thing You Do" , I was inspired to come up with a simple 1960's-esque rock backbeat, a la the Oneders! lol Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, "3&", and on the "&" of 4 in both bars. Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes falling on "1, 2, 3, 4" in the first bar, and then on 1, 3, and 4. Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on 2, the "&a" of 2, and on 4 in the first bar, followed by notes on 2, the "&a" of 2, on "3e&", and on 4 in the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
