I've just been informed that Dec. 4-21 is a holy month of sorts, running from the anniversary of Frank Zappa's death to his birthday. I don't even want to guess how many hundreds of hours I've spent listening to his music and transcribing his drummers' performances, and I thought I'd share some old favorites:

Don't Eat Yellow Snow / Nanook Rubs It / St. Alfonso's Pancake Breakfast / Father O'Blivion - I've been listening to this one since my brother brought the record home in 1973.
Apostrophe - jam with Jack Bruce and Jim Gordon
Cheepnis
San Berdino
Heavenly Bank Account
The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing
Dumb All Over
Society Pages
Rubber Shirt/Sheik Yerbouti Tango RS is actually the bass and drum tracks from two different tunes put together.
Central Scrutinizer / Joe's Garage
Packard Goose - one / two be sure to check out Vinnie Colaiuta's blowing on the guitar solo
Keep It Greasy - more Vinnie insanity on the guitar solo, in 19/16.

We can, and hopefully will, go on for weeks with Z clips. I'll start off with this delicious piece of music:

Wow wow wow, that has to be the best early/mid 70's live recording I've ever heard. Stunning clarity. The music's pretty special too. From composition to performance, quite unique. Thanks for posting, I've never heard that before. I love surprises!!

Thanks for the reminder of how much incredible music FZ gave us ...

Peaches En Regalia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grmeznspMIc ... wonderful sounds, writing and playing,

Directly from My Heart to You: Great blues ... Sugarcane Harris kills it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkjblGpG_rA

The Grand Wazoo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsw9V2WjITI - Aynsley Dunbar lays down a swinging boogie groove and some of my fave FZ guitar

Sadly, I can't find a good-sounding link to Son of Orange County / More Trouble Every Day.

Another version of Sofa, from Live in NY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC2NXk3KMPs

I Promise Not to Come in Your Mouth - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaMLUD0wKm4 - the title is cringeworthy (mission accomplished, I guess) but the music is incredible - guitar, bass, drums and, especially, the synth solo knock me out.

He had such a wicked and fertile, imagination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJREunPGcjc

And who can forget Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Sexually Aroused Gas Mask? :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78jNEET0EKw

Hey man! Thanks for the awesome links. I love Zappa's music. Could you possibly share some of your transcriptions? I would love to read and learn some.

Thanks!

Jim

P.S. Frank Zappa's not dead he just smells funny.

I would probably need to re-write them- I did them in the 80's, and haven't seen them in years. They're probably in a box in my mom's basement. You should just do what I did- jump in and start transcribing. See what happens.

But maybe I'll take this as a challenge to see how fast I can write up the blowing on Packard Goose...

I watched the Zappa plays Zappa show that honored his 70th, so I had a good concert experience this year.

For someone who is new to Zappa, which album would everyone suggest starting with? Joe's Garage seems to be the one hear about the most...

From what little Zappa I've heard so far it sounds interesting, but I think I need to get a CD and really give it a thorough listen...

Apostrophe, Sheik Yerbouti, Joe's Garage, Roxy & Elsewhere, Live in New York, Overnite Sensation, You Are What You Is, and One Size Fits All are all great.
