Your perfect ride..hats..crash..only if..

What is it from any maker that would be perfect only if. If Paiste would make the ridges more numerous and smaller on their rude hihats I do believe they could be in my basement right now. What little thing could some manufacturer do to an instrument that could sell you on it quicker.

If Paiste would just make their Dark Energy rides thinner! Holy moly I am envious of that modded one that was posted here recently.

+1 even though I love my Dark Energy MK II. I really wish they'd make some paper thing dark energy crashes, but I'm also very happy with my Traditionals.

For years I felt I’d be totally happy with my Zildjians if they could lose that low frequency “gongy” sound that’s underneath all of their cymbals. Turns out I had to leave them and go to Paiste to achieve this - so I’m really happy with Paiste at the moment.

This is where I differ from the Drummerworld majority. I'll pick hihats. I'm never ever totally satisfied with anything!. I spend hours youtubing hihats with 🎧. Lately it's been Bosphorus vintage hihats but because of weight they differ wildly. I can't have that. So far it's the heavier the better. The top with stick tip is heavenlyx10. The side with shoulder is the make or break for me. Anyway (today) I'm digging the Paiste 900 series sound edge but tomorrow I might think no way. It only took me 30 years to discover that Sonor phonic is as good as it gets for me. Hihats are just one more pain in thee - - -!. Why can't I just be like everyone else..get some hats and be happy...move on with life. I've got some kind of weird sickness. Always been that way. If I get a new frikkin toothbrush I'll stand there a minute and try to decide which color!.

I don't think they would be perfect, but I wish Zildjian would become more consistent.
1 lasts a 1000 years if you don't break it So key is to find (those) one's that you like..
If you keep going after them and they sound bad, go after the old ones from the 60s into early 70s

My philosophy is if I can’t love the ones I want I love the ones I’m with. I reckon new cymbals won’t make me any better. Though I do have a wandering eye and when those Dark Energy hats first came out they cast a spell on me- had my mind gamboling in lust for those two ladies. But though weakened I held my resolve and just fantasized about them and never touched. I have to say my 17 in Dream Vintage Bliss crash/ride (gimmick name) with one rivet has replaced my Zild 14 in paper thin crash that has held the spot of my fave crash for decades. Never thought it would happen so maybe I should broaden my horizons and start dating different cymbals.

I feel the opposite way. I’m so glad that there is quite a bit of deviation from specimen to specimen of the same model. I’m VERY picky, but I don’t really get to dismiss an entire line or weight or whatever based on my experiences with just a few cymbals—I have to take each cymbal on its own merits and attributes.

My contribution: my 24” K Light Ride would be the perfect cymbal, if only it were smaller.

I probably wouldn't have this opinion if I got to "try before you buy," but I don't.

I've had a 20" Meinl Byzance Dry Ride in my collection for 20 years that's a decent bell from being one of the best rides ever made.

My 22 K Con Renaissance, 20 Amedia Vintage thin crash and 15" k lights are about as close to perfect as I've got

If only cymbals didn't cost so much, I'd by more!
I know that everything is more expensive and prices of everything are crazy but cymbals are really getting out of hand. As of the date and time of this post a Zildjian 20" A Medium ride on Sweetwater (and extremely common cymbal from an extremely common retailer) is $350! One cymbal. Not a bad cymbal by any means but not even close to extraordinary or top of the line... $350. It doesn't make sense to me that you can get a decent entire kit (if you don't mind poplar shells) with good build quality including a full basic set of hardware from any major manufacturer (like Tama or Pearl for example) for $400-$600 yet the hi hat, crash, and ride to get you started will cost a grand.

This is another reason I started buying Paiste PST7 cymbals. They sound and feel pretty damn close to 2002s, sound better than A's, and cost barely more then Zildjian or Sabian entry level lines.

Well put.

The kicker is, unlike drum shells, which can be experimented with and improved upon by head choice and tuning, cymbals are what they are... there's little I can do to make them "better" (aside from, maybe, "playing" them better - but that's another topic).

So, what do I do? I buy what I like, and I make the best of it. Is it ideal? No... but you don't have much choice when you don't have the funds to buy and try as much as you'd like to find what works best.

I don’t know enough about what makes cymbals tick to know or even care about specific custom things I might enjoy.

Especially when 99% of the audience listening to you can't hear the difference between a Zildjian Scimitar and a Paiste Masters.

I'm on board with that as well. I had to walk away from a 14" set of 2002 soundedge next to some 14 pst7 hats. I told my fiance i liked the pst7's to the point where i couldn't make a decision and I'm a big fan of the 14 SE hats.
