Woodstock 55 YEARS OLD!

Incredibly, WOODSTOCK 1969 is 55 Years old as of August 15, 2024. Not to be living in the past, but it is a little puzzling that there is nary a comment about it in the Media. Woodstock was probably THE cultural event of the Time for Baby Boomers. I was not in attendance at Bethel, NY, but certainly saw the Woodstock Movie released the following Year. Watching Sanatana's Drummer Michael Shrieve at 16 years old was mesmerizing to me. At the time I had just started a hiatus from drumming in the fall of 1969 as we 3 HS buddies who played and learned our instruments for about 2+ years together went different ways after HS Graduation in June 1969. I had nowhere to keep my Drum set (That's what we called it back then, living with my parents in a Garden Apartment in Queens, NY. I had to sell it off. Then after 50 Years, as I was approaching retirement in 2018, I mentioned to my wife of 44 years at that time (50 years this November) that I'd like to play drums at a local music studio "to get it out of my system". That XMAS she gifted me a cheapo Gammon kit. I started the resurrection in the ensuing months in 2019.

With respect to Woodstock, I recall the Banners on the streets of Forest Hills, Queens announcing the Art & Music Festival at Woodstock for August 15, 16 & 17. Of Course, nobody knew that it would be the Explosion of Humanity it was. Woodstock catapulted the careers of Joe Cocker, Santana, Ten Years After (I'm Goin' Home [by Helicopter] , and Crosby Stills & Nash. Great memories. Now it's Gone With The Wind. I guess I can always go to a Taylor Swift concert.

the Stephen Stills Dallas Taylor 45 rpm intro
Arlo Guthrie and Paul Motian

and the most obscure gem imo

Villanova Junction Jimi Hendrix

The lack of any comments is a further testament that Woodstock '69 is Gone With The Wind! No Country For Old Men, I guess.

And August 6 and 9 were the 79th anniversaries of the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945, certainly a major event in the history, yet, there was no mention of the event on TV news. I have no idea if it made the news in Japan. Maybe they'll mention it next year on the 80th anniversary, but I'm not holding my breath. I think there was a cursory mention of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944.

I'm a critic of the way TV handles the news cycle in general. Failure to mention these events conveniently sweeps them under the rug for younger generations. History has a funny way of repeating itself.

Did not go to Woodstock, but saw the movie a couple of times in later years. I had never seen or heard anything like it before.

Not surprised of no mention Because 55 is not a magic number.
One hears of commemorations on 10, 25,50, 75 and 100 years.
there was plenty written about Woodstock 5 years ago.
Good thing Ticketmaster or Live Nation did not exist back then.

The 1999 event was fraught with violence
That was No Comparison to 1969. Woodstock 1969 had a "Magic" for that generation (My Generation) that will not be repeated again. It was just different from Beatlemania and the Swifties of today. It affected Hundreds of MILLIONS of Baby Boomers World Wide.
Guitarists TODAY...STILL can't deal with Alvins prowess a million years ago. 😃
You have that Right , IMHO. I still feel insulted being a BIG Ten Years After Fan (even B4 Woodstock but greatly enhanced after Woodstock), that TYA is NOT in the Rock HOF! With so many paltry, ridiculous members inducted - just based on the I'm Goin' Home performance at Woodstock that should have been enough for their Induction.

Yeah, but Time is Running Out for The generation to "Remember".

I was 18 and was not there too, in fact i had not been to any Concert. But after the Movie was released in 1970 and seeing Ten Years After (with all eyes and ears on Alvin Lee), I grabbed tickets to see them at The Fillmore East shortly thereafter. Man, I was NOT disappointed. No Light Show BS, No Smoke machines, just great Rock & Roll/ Blues. Watching Captain Speed Fingers perform was a great memory. RIP Alvin (March 2013) - one of the GOATs!

Not sure if there's any significance to this other than "time is passing," but it's the same amount of time this week from the end of the Vietnam War to Y2K as it is from Y2K to today.

More importantly, it was 53 years between the introduction of the Ludwig Jazz-Er-Up drum kit and the recording of Stairway to Heaven, and Stairway to Heaven was recorded 53 years ago.
