What's your latest purchase?

The wood Rogers Dyna-sonic has been on my radar for a few years. Finally pulled the trigger on a gold sparkle lacquer after talking to a good friend and hearing this sample. Got it tuned just like it and wow!

Thanks for posting. I am assuming that this is the one that you purchased.

From the post it looks like it sounds great. How is the build quality and the hardware? Is the throw off solid and reliable?

The reason that I am asking is that next year I plan to purchase a new snare and it will be Ludwig, Gretsch, or Rogers. So, I am trying to learn about their different offerings. So far I have only ventured into snares built with metal. My best snare is the Yamaha Recording Custom Aluminum, but right now maple snares are on the table as an option too. .

Yes, but mine is a lacquer finish and not a wrap.

I've only had it a few days, but the build quality and hardware seem excellent. I slammed rimshots on it for 2 hours and it held its tuning. Then I played more intricate patterns with sticks and brushes, and the sensitivity was amazing. Every ghost note was there. I'm new to the Dyna-sonic strainer system, so I wanted to buy new (not used), as I believe Bill Detamore sets these up properly before they ship. Sure enough, it sounds perfect as is, so I won't be messing with it anytime soon, but it does come with instructions on how to set it up.

I love Ludwig snares and own 17 of them, of various woods and metals. If you just want a workhorse, no-fuss maple snare at a good price, I'd consider their Classic Maple over the Dyna-sonic. The DS is more complicated with its strainer, which also adds to the cost. For one of my bands, I wanted the extra sensitivity of the DS, but also those strong rimshot backbeats. Plus, the lacquer is gorgeous.... ;)

Thanks for the detailed and full review. Yes, as of now these two maple snares are on my radar:
Ludwig Classic Maple 5x14
Rogers Drums PowerTone Snare Drum 5x14

Some Swiss goodness. I've wanted the 20" Sig. Full ride for awhile and it's everything their website says: "Medium bright, full, rich. Wide range, balanced mix. Even response with clear, silvery stick sound supported by full wash."

My first foray into Directdriveland. It's...different. I don't *not* like it. Not a "game-changer" by any means. Doesn't seem radically different than my 9000. It does seem...*quieter* though. I tried the DW beater I normal use and it just seemed to "tap" the BD. So I put the stock Gibraltor beater back on and it seems fine.

I’ve been thinking about going in a different direction with cymbals, so I picked up a Sabian 19” AAX Xplosion and a Paiste 20” 2002 crash. As of now, don’t really care for either one. Going to evaluate further over the weekend but as of now I’m fairly certain they’re both getting returned. Both are very different from what I’ve been using, so maybe I just need to adjust. I think I’m favoring the Sabian, but neither blew my socks off.

We’ll see…

I've been thinking of getting rid of my A's and doing K Sweets....in case anyone is thinking of doing the opposite.

The Sabian and the Paiste are both being returned. Not that they’re bad cymbals, just not what I’m looking for at this point.

Decided to spend a little more and order what I really wanted all along. A Zildjian 19” K dark thin crash is on the way. I’m a huge fan of the k dark thins; very excited to have one on the way. Hopefully I like it as much as the gazillion videos I watched before placing the order!

Damn..i like it better than my 20" Istanbul traditional original ride I just got from Memphis. That's a beautiful sound.

In my personal opinion, the K Sweets very much live up to the hype. I have a 17" crash, and it is amazing.
I too have a 17" Sweet crash and I was initially underwhelmed. Put it back on the kit recently and am in love with it. I realized that it's more subtle than maybe any of my other crashes, some of which are very bright (Paiste 2002, Zildjian A) or dark (Byzance Dark) or dry (Byzance Extra Dry) or trashy (Paiste PSTX, Zildjian Cluster). The Sweet is just...right. It's the goldilocks crash: not too bright, not too dark, not too dry, not too trashy. Just right.

Same goes for the 14" Sweet hats with which I fell in love instantly.

I bought a K dark thin not long ago. It sounds a little heavier than a thin to me. I took my 18 k med thin dark to the store when I picked it out. I like the k cymbals. They don't all sound the same though, even if they are identical.

never really owned a nice kit, got this pretty little diddy from Thomann with some Tama soft bags so I can gig with it. Haven changed the heads, just dialing in the "gig" setup. Really impressed so far!
It sure looks good.

I just put all my Sweets on for band practice and they do shine. The 19" even kinda works as left side ride. The 15" hats are more responsive than I remember and they sound really really good!
