What's your latest purchase?

This beautiful Gretsch USA Custom kit arrived yesterday . 22 x 14 bass , 12 x 7 (yep 7) rack Tom and 16 x 14 floor Tom . It is in a newer finish from Gretsch called Black Metallic gloss lacquer . They had a satin Black Metallic finish previously and decided to do this in gloss . I have always been a fan of the Black Galaxy wraps and Black Sparkle wraps so this finish really appealed to me .
I plan to get a Tom mount for the bass drum installed as I prefer it to putting the rack Tom in a Tom stand or hanging from a cymbal stand . IMG_1420.jpegIMG_1418.jpegIMG_1417.jpeg

Discovered this cool VF pack while browsing through a Mom & Pop music store in Biloxi MS. last week. I decided this would make a good donation for a local school band director who might need a little extra for the percussion section or a promising student who lacks the resources for their own sticks.

Wow. I can see why you went with that finish.

If I was ordering a new Gretsch kit, that finish would definitely be a contender.

Congratulations!

This was the summation of my thread about my Pearl World Series kit, but technically it's also (one of) my latest purchases, so, for those who want the eye candy here:

The EC2 batters on my Tama Superstar Classics started to deaden out after 50-60 gigs and I don't know how many rehearsals. I traded them out for my preferred tom batters, UV2s. I can already hear +5 tone. Looking forward to this weekend's gig.

The new heads look great, @alparrott! (y)

I find your post particularly interesting as I’ve swapped out heads recently as well. I’ve had UV2s on my tom batters and UV1s on my two snare drums for approximately 60-70 gigs. Within the last couple of gigs I’ve had two of the UV2s and one of the UV1s go door nail dead on me. That data seems to line up fairly close with your experience as well.

That’s not a complaint, by the way. Both models held up well for what I consider a fairly robust gigging schedule and provided me with outstanding performance in that timeframe. What I found curious was the complete dead part. All three heads went from sounding great to irrecoverably dead almost immediately. With Remo heads, I usually get an indication they’re ’on the verge’ but can still manipulate at least a couple more gigs out of them before they become unusable.

All of that to segue into my latest purchase. Coated Ambassadors for my two snare drums. Making a run down to Pro Drum tomorrow and when I return, all my toms will also be sporting coated Ambs. I think my drumhead experimentation days are finally over. It’s time for the prodigal son to come back home and stay home.

Love the Remo Coated Ambassador for my snare drum heads.

I however, wanted to give a thinner, 2 ply head a try on my Ludwig Supraphonic LM402.

After much deliberation I decided to use a Evans HD Coated head. (Inner 7.5 mil, with a 5 mil outer ply with a "floating" inner 2 mil inner control ring).

Tuned up the Supraphonic to G3, took to rehearsal and it was all I was hoping for. Sounded way better than the Remo Ambassador. (Try an Emperor next?)

Really happy with the Evans HD head on the Supraphonic snare drum. Really happy.

Along with the coated Ambassadors I picked up from my run down to Pro Drum yesterday, I also saw this little thing and had to have it. It’s a LP tambourine made from the same material as their Jam Blocks, with a rubber ridge to hit with sticks. It yields a soft, polite tambo sound which fits right in with my overall presentation.

It’s pretty stealthy, too. Gonna mount it off the hi-hat stand with a percussion clamp mount I already own. Just like the coated Ambs, it’ll get in some music tonight. Looking forward to it.

Really nice. I have the satin finish on my Brooklyn kit. I really like the gloss.
