What's your favorite snare drum TODAY?

I have 5 snares. I’d say two of them alternate being my favorite. Right now my Pearl Sensitone 5.5” Custome Alloy Steel is my favorite. I also have a Pearl Masters Maple 6.5” that I love as well.

Ironically enough, my favorite snare today or any day is one that I seldom use. 1941 Ludwig & Ludwig 7X14. Ol' Whitey as I like to call it. When my gigging and recording days are over, and I have a kit set up in the living room for my daily enjoyment, it'll be this one that's on the stand.

The reason I don't use it all the time is that the hardware simply doesn't stand up to everyday use in a contemporary environment. The throw off loosens on me after a song and the stick chopper hoops are deadly on drum sticks. I could work around those without fouling up the drum, but I have a couple of modern drums that keep me happy enough for all my live work and most of my recording.

And here's a link to a recording from probably 15 years ago that features this drum:

Cool song and drum. Good snare recording too. 👍🏼👍🏼

I don't have a photo, but I have a snare that I've just been using for daily practice. I've always had issues with it. No matter what heads, or how I tune it, it sounds like garbage. It's a 14" x 7" Maple shell and was custom made for me. I did use it live for a while, and in the studio a few times. But for some reason the last few years I just grew to dislike it so much. Well that was until TODAY. I was about to take it off the kit in favor of one one of my tour snares, and I hesitated. I tuned it up a little bit tighter than I normally go and omg, it sounded great! I can't explain why. I've tried tuning it so many different ways with so many different heads, and for some reason today it just sounded incredible. It wouldn't work with any of the current gigs I have, but I am really hoping that at some point I get a call from someone where this will be THE snare I take on the road.
