If you're speaking about tube lugs in general they typically have less mass/footprint on a drum shell than your standard modern style lugs.Is the thinking behind this style lug ( with that open space underneath ) to alow a minimal amount of metal making contact with the shell? Better tone/ volume ?
Or is it a stylistic or cosmetic flair?
Thanks
I can't speak directly about Ronn's tube lug design per se, but he approaches snare drum building with a specific overall weight shell and low mass/minimal hardware (8 lugs at the most), wide snare beds and 42-strand snares to produce more resonant snare drums. The only piece of hardware Ronn uses with high mass is his proprietary throw off. But Ronn has a keen eye for aesthetics as well.
