What's your favorite snare drum TODAY?

Is the thinking behind this style lug ( with that open space underneath ) to alow a minimal amount of metal making contact with the shell? Better tone/ volume ?
Or is it a stylistic or cosmetic flair?
Thanks
If you're speaking about tube lugs in general they typically have less mass/footprint on a drum shell than your standard modern style lugs.

I can't speak directly about Ronn's tube lug design per se, but he approaches snare drum building with a specific overall weight shell and low mass/minimal hardware (8 lugs at the most), wide snare beds and 42-strand snares to produce more resonant snare drums. The only piece of hardware Ronn uses with high mass is his proprietary throw off. But Ronn has a keen eye for aesthetics as well.

In the past I've always preferred metal
snares for my preferred 14x6.5

However, last year I took a punt on a Maple 14x6.5 Pearl Masters Custom snare to see if we got on (as I already had a Mahogany version), and I've not regretted it.

Great all round snare that sounds fantastic regardless of the venue/stage.

It’s seen a lot of action since as it’s pretty much my ‘go to’ for live playing now.

The primary reason is my teacher suggested that I get the fuzzy beater to play quieter bass during Jazz. The slightly different sound works well with double bass playing.

I have one and it’s incredible! Haven’t gigged with it yet though, or my other cast bronze for that matter. The Off Beat drum is every bit as good as my Sonor SQ2 cast bronze, and comes in at a lower price. My only complaint, and it’s a minor one, is that the finish seems to be especially prone to fingerprints. One spot is actually starting to patina already thanks to fingertip oil.
Yep, awesome drum!!! I use 0000 steel wool to remove the patina and then polish the drum with car wax. That helps a lot. There are a lot of small builders making cast bronze snares these days for around half the price of a Tama. Might have been a cool drum 45 years ago but sounds like other cast bronze drums that are available for half the price. 2K is still a lot of $$$$

To each their own.

Big news! My favorite snare just switched. I have cast aside my Pearl Sensitone Aluminum 5x14. It's now sitting in a case on the shelf. My new favorite is my Pearl Sensitone Elite Brass 5x14. I pulled it out on a whim, did some quick tuning and it's sounding GREAT! I guess sitting in a case for years does something to improve sound? :)

Yamaha Anton Fig signature has been my go-to for ten years, and a not insignificant amount of drummer colleagues have tried buying it from me! 😄

I’ve owned six snares and played a bunch more, but now I’m down to just two. One of them is the aforementioned Yammy and another the 14x5.5 Kumu with wood hoops. Something tells me I ought to get an LM400 and an LM402 to bookend the wooden snares with aluminum classics, but we shall see..!

My fave snare when I'm at my girlfriend's house is my 14 X 5 Steel Pearl Sensitone. Very simple, not flashy nor expensive....... just like me.

When I'm at home it's my Chad Smith Signature snare. I love them both. They are everything I need.

I used the Chad Smith for years..very underrated drum. I say that because I don't hear alot of talk about it. Why..i don't know.

Come to think of it...... yeah, the CS snare doesn't have much of a gossip column about the place.

As to why.......I don't really know either. They really are a magnificent little workhorse.
