what's the difference between the Groove and the Pocket?

That guy is amazing. I have watched that special this was from. This is where I excuse my self by saying he over plays... way too much, But that is the smallness my little bit of ego that is actually saying he is amazing. A lot of his playing is a huge part of the songs, it is almost like he is the centerpiece. Still one of the best drummers out there... Kind of get the Simon philips/terry bozzio vibe. x100 I imagine when guitar players 1st heard EVH they must have felt like i do now... Turn my kit into flower pots after this, maybe I can grow some tomatoes or something.
I agree that he is amazing, I don't think he overplays, everything that he does is intentional and added at the correct time/part of the song but, when he is doing all that, the drums ARE NOT the groove guide. the other instruments/vocals are.

Don't turn your kit into flower pots.. Dissect instead!

Nobody learned complex things in one shot, we all had to start with smaller parts and understand them and add more and build from there.

Part of this guy's playing is that he uses a lot of Hi Hat accents which he combines with tom accents and a few snare hits in between (for a lot of his drum rolls).
If you want to learn how he does that, you have to take one part at a time starting from the beat before the roll (maybe a couple of measures back) and then playing that, then play the roll, even if you have to slow it down to say 50% to understand what the patterns are (because trust me, there are patterns).
I don't say you have to cover the song note for note, or that you have to cover the song at all, just play along and learn the techniques to the best of your ability then apply those to other things (that is the part where the work starts to pay off).

I knew songs basically note for note for years but I couldn't play them (because I sucked at double bass ) one example is Slayer's Mandatory Suicide.
I used to play it correctly until the double bass part which I faked my way through. fast forward almost 25 years and for some reason I am more fit now that I am older and I can actually play that song correctly with the proper double bass part. I know it is extremely slow when compared to some current metal but hey one thing at a time, I tackled that, next will be Juular by Devin Townsend.... I can reach the speed, just don't don't have the stamina to play the entire song...yet.

No I am not trying to play like this person. Have you seen the full show that this was taken from?
No I have a lot of work ahead of me to even learn songs again. Only ever knew about 10 songs at a given time because mostly played originals as the original drummer. I have never had the means to set up in a rehearsal space of my own. Thats why i haven't played in 24 years.

Pocket drummers? Think Bernard Purdie, Steve Jordan, Nate Smith, Ndugu, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jim Keltner, Zigaboo Modeliste, John Robinson. There are many more.
