What to use with a 18" A Custom Fast Crash

Hey,

I have an Zildjian 18" A Custom Fast Crash that I love. It sounds great when I play with my band. I'm looking for another crash cymbal that will compliment it's qualities. Does anyone else have an 18" A Custom Fast Crash that they use frequently? What other crash cymbal/s do you reckon sound best with it?

Thanks

I would suggest a K Dark Crash. Similar, but different.
I use a K 18 Dark Crash along with a 17" A Custom Crash (very thin, an older model, like the Fast Crashes of today) and they complement each other well.

I would add an A Custom 17" to go with the fast crash. Generally the same type of sound but with a little more body (less pssshh). This should make for congruous successive crashes as well as yield a nice round tonal spectrum when played simultaneously.

I’ve used 16 and 18 A.C. Fast Crashes for dozens of gigs in a house kit at a pub, for a range of musical styles. They complement each other perfectly. The 16 is a bit lightweight if you’re playing heavy loud music, but still has its place as a quick, bright accent. Conversely, the 16 is perfect for a full crash sound in a quiter setting.

That’s interesting, I was thinking of getting a 16 just as a bright accent as you said because the bands I play in are pretty loud haha

Thanks, I reckon I’ll go with this, unless something at the music shop piques my ear. I might go 18” though what do you think?

Yeah the size just depends on your style and taste. I think 17" crashes are the cat's meow.

I use a "regular" 16" A Custom Crash with mine. I had it paired with a 16" A. Custom Fast Crash initially, but it lacked the open tone of my 18" (it sounded like it had tape on it), plus it does what many smaller fast crashes do, it has a glassy, "hissy" overtone that I just don't care for. The regular 16" A. Custom crash matched it perfectly. Strong full tone and pitch wise is perfect.

My main crash is a 16” A Custom Fast Crash, and I’ve never heard anything more perfect in my life dude.

Whatever you do, buy the next cymbal in person, and take your current cymbal with you to see how they sound together. Yes, you will annoy the people in the music store, but it doesn't matter.

Don't listen to us telling you what to use. Only you can decide.

Try cymbals and use what sounds best to you, not us.
