For years my "do everything ride" was my 20" K Custom. It's still a great ride, but it doesn't actually do everything: it's a little bright and pingy for quieter styles, and crashing it is a big blonggggggg sound.
So I was searching for a slightly more versatile ride. Someone was selling an AAX Omni about 20 minutes outside of Spokane a few years back and it turned out my bass player was headed to Spokane that very week. I game him the cash and he picked it up for me like a true friend. Now this is TRULY a do-everything ride - nice crash, tahhh at low volumes, plenty of ping and clang at higher volumes. Like Bo said, you really can play a gig with just this cymbal and hats.

Is that an ozone I see in the background? This Paiste Masters 21” Dry ride has been on my kit for the last 6 months. Its sound fits well with the tunes we work on. It has a nice, dry, woody ping and a very quiet wash.

They’re the Paiste PSTX cymbals, similar to the Ozone pies.Is that an ozone I see in the background?

All you can do is buy it and try it! Those Swiss know how to make their cymbals... what you hear is what you get! They make there cymbals with Precision Sound... go for it!This is a tough question as I feel I've been searching for THE ride for a while.
I have a number of really nice rides, but none of them seem perfect.
The one I've been most satisfied with lately is my sons 22" Paiste 2002 ride.
I'm wondering if a Paiste Dark Energy would be the one.
(The rides I switch between - Paiste 602 ME 24", Paiste Blue Bell, Paiste 602 20" flat, Paiste Giant Beat 26", Zildjian K Custom Session 20".)
Another 22 K con Ren here. It’s got a lot of usable sounds at different areas of the bow with specific sweet spots, it challenges the player a bit which I think is great. The edge is lethally sharp. Nice bell and crash.
Adam Nussbaum talked talked about playing the cluster hammering areas in that area at the edge as well which I will play with too. I fine having precision in those areas you mentioned makes it a unique instrument. It's really opposite of my 22 Kerope, which has a sweet spot like the broad side of side of a barn. The 20" Ren looks very interesting as well which to my understanding is not a little brother copy of the 22 but rather designed a compliment and unique in it self. I would consider I wasn't already happy with a 20" CODI have found I play 3-4 very specific zones on the K Con Ren as well, the Bell is amazing, then out towards the edge for a full jazzy ride sound with good wash and but still stick definition, then about 5" below the bell for good cutting stick definition with the right amount of warmth so not as to be a "ping" ride sound. Then I also will flat stick the 4-5" of the edge for a trashier full boil sound.........it really is a wonderful instrument to have on the kit.
Where are the stick marks on that bad boy?
The photo is from when I unboxed it last year…that said, like fellow clean freak @yammyfan I like to keep my cymbals sparkly clean (and lemon fresh!)…that reminds me, I need to clean my 2002 sound edge hats…Where are the stick marks on that bad boy?
Through stick trauma and cleaning, is it losing any of its blue finish, or has it maintained its perfect paint-job? I ask only because I know no one else who's owned this cymbal. The photo is from when I unboxed it last year…that said, like fellow clean freak @yammyfan I like to keep my cymbals sparkly clean (and lemon fresh!)…that reminds me, I need to clean my 2002 sound edge hats…
Just wondering if the blue part of the cymbal is enamel? Also does any of the blue color chip off from drumming?
It’s just painted on I think? There’s no wear as yet as I’m not playing it enough but I will get back to you when I gig it regularly!! It’s my forever cymbal so I don’t mind if it shows some well earned battle scars in the future…Just wondering if the blue part of the cymbal is enamel? Also does any of the blue color chip off from drumming?
