the inimitable Mr. Anthony Williams. Titled "Love Song"from his 2nd solo album "Spring" 1965.
beginning bars of 5 in the head ( 2 against 5... 1 and of 3) reoccurs each time head restated
I have to be the cliche guy and say Take 5 from Brubeck b/c it was the first song I ever got to play on drums when I was real young. There are a lot of "warm fuzzies" about my dad (who was my first drum teacher) centered around that song.
probably "7 Days" by Sting comes in as the close second
With songs like Take Five, Castilian Blues/Drums, Far More Blue / Far More Drums, the ear-wormy Unisphere and others, the Dave Brubeck Quartet are masters of 5/4 time.
But from 1966, off the Quartet's album "Time In" (probably my favorite record in their Time Signature series), comes one of my favorite songs ever by Brubeck, 40 Days.
Dave would later score this for choir and ensemble, but it's this raw, simpler version that moves me most. Poignant and sublime, my throat catches at Dave’s first touch of the keys, every time.
(And check out the others I listed if you haven't before, all of it playfully earwormy and fun.)
And a couple from me… with the mention of Stars Wars - and the earlier mentions of Dave Brubeck and the clash between the two every May 4…. I sorta smooshed Take Five with the Imperial March and came up with this…. (with some Yoda’s Theme in 7/4 thrown in at the end). Can’t remember if I’ve posted this here before or not - if so, sorry for the redundancy.
Arcturus - Don Ellis (a later piece of Don’s that we performed at Montreux in ’77)
