It is crazy how quickly and thoroughly he staked his own insanely distinctive style. I’m not sure there’s another drummer ever with such an instantly recognizable sound, even to the general public, not even Ringo or Bonham or Moon. Maybe Phil Collins, but I think that was as much production and sound as style.
