"Wake 'n Break" Series

Today's wake 'n break is a linear groove that is broken up between the bass drum, hi-hat, and snare drum. Listening back to it, I can hear a touch of "Wanna Be Starting Something" in it. Taking the bass drum first, we have a pickup on the "a" of 4, followed by notes on the "e" of 1, the "&" of 2, on 3 and the "a" of 3, and then we're back at the "a" of 4. Next, our hi-hats are being chicked on the "&" of 1 and on 4. Meanwhile, we are also striking our hi-hat on the "a" of 1 and on the "e" of 4. Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on 2 and on the "&" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and that your memorial day weekend is going well!

Today's wake 'n break is a linear groove that is four on the floor. What makes this groove is the buzzed snare note. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, 2, 3, and 4. Next, our hi-hats are falling on the "&" of 2 and on the "a" of 3. Last but not least, our snare has a buzzed note on the "&" of 1, a ghost note on the "e" of 3 and then an accented note on the "&" of 4. No time for a fun outro today due to having to leave early for a gig. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Today's wake 'n break is a ride bell groove with open hi-hat notes played slightly behind the beat. This is another groove that I believe can be felt as either a bar of 6/8 or a bar of 3/4. Personally, I hear it in 3/4, so I will be breaking it down as such. Taking the feet first, our bass drum is falling on "1&" and on the "a" of 3. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are being chicked on "1, 2, 3" with an open note on the "a" of 3. Last but not least, our snare drum has a single accented note on 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a slinky two bar ride groove that has a short cymbal choke stop at the end of the second bar. Taking the feet first, our bass drum has notes falling on "1&", the "e" and "a" of 3, and on 4 in both bars. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are being chicked on the "&" of 2, the "&" of 3, and on the "&" of 4 in the first bar, and then on the "&" of 2 and on the "&" of 3 in the second bar. We are also striking the hi-hat for an open note on 4 in the first bar. Moving along to the snare drum, we have a ruff that leads into the bass drum on 1, followed by accented notes on 2 and on the "&" of 4 in the first bar. The second bar is more of the same thing, except that we are not letting the open hi-hat note on "4" linger. Last but not least, our high tom is falling on the "a" of 2 and on 3 in both bars. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

My SD card is corrupted, so today's wake 'n break was recorded on my phone. NOTE: In my editing program, the video showed up with the correct angle, but youtube automatically turns it sideways. I apologize for that! Any way, it's a shuffle groove for the pandeiro, where we have a steady slew of eighth note triplets with closed tone slap accents on 2, the "let" of 2, and on 4. The rest of the notes are played as open tones. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!
