Vent or Sound Holes in Toms

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it were common practice in the sixties, or even now, for manufacturers not to put vent holes in tenor toms. I have a vintage Supreme and an older Ludwig and neither have vent holes. I'm positive that other brands do. Is there a reason for this? Thank you very much.

I've seen people put vent holes in the sides of their bass drums. If you need to vent more air from a tom, why not cut a hole in the reso head? Seems to work for bass drums.

I'm surprised by this. All of the 60's era Luddies I've seen have a vent hole right in the middle of the keystone badge.
