Updated Regal Tip Thread October 2022-Latest News?

One of the things I love about Vater's website is they have sliders you can adjust to instantly dial down to what length and diameter you are looking for in a particular section. I wish all stick manufacturer websites were as easy to navigate, but ah well.

I can't guarantee you'll find them in stock, but Vater makes three 16" x .580 maple sticks
Sugar Maple 9A
Sugar Maple Phat Ride
Sugar Maple Fusion

Each has a slightly different tip and taper. I've used the Fusion stick a lot in the past; it's a great all-purpose stick.

They also have the Sugar Maple Super 5A, which is 16.5" x .580, if you want a little more reach. I've also used these quite a bit, and they're also quite great.

I also have to agree that with maple, adding a little more diameter isn't as much of a big deal, at least not to me. My go-to jazz stick is an SD9, which is .610, but it doesn't play anything like a big stick. I'd at least consider trying something in the 5B/.595 range, but again, I think you'd be surprised how nimble the SD9 is.

I just went to
Regaltip.com

Unless I am dreaming……they’re
baaaaack!
You're dreaming - they are "sold out" of 16 of their 24 types of sticks. It's a clearance of remaining inventory. Same old sad broken record. I've moved on: I was a RT 5A Maple devotee but I just invested a lot of money in Vic Firth Double Glaze. They are hickory but a tad bit thinner in diameter. About same weight. With glaze that feels just like RT. Played 3 gigs last week with a VF pair they're a worthy replacement for RT. Buy 6+ pairs from Sweetwater and they are $12.99 each. Done. No more RT drama.

Got a dozen pair of Regal Tip 5A nylon tip hickory - 105NT back in 2017 - still have a few pair untouched. After the news I recently started researching for a suitable replacement. Well got some other 5A nylon's over time, still in decent shape.
I got my micrometer and measured them. All were 16 inches long

Regal Tip 0.600 dia. Zildjian 0.585 dia. Promark 0.565 dia. The pic shows how the tapers differ.

From other 5A nylon website specs:

Vic Firth .565, Vater .570, Los Cabos .575

This peaked my curiosity. These RT's were 'fatter' than other 5A's. I looked at the dimensions of various 5B nylons in hickory.
The closest matches to RT with 0.600 dia.

Vater .605, Zildjian .600, Los Cabos .598, Vic Firth .595, Promark .590

Conclusions:

Going to handle some 5B's to feel them out.

Thank you. Now I get why I like ProMark and Vader 5a’s best…they’re narrower. I’d include Vic Firth, but something about the finish doesn’t agree with me.

I've been a die hard Combo user forever. After trying every brand known to man I finally found something that has the same feel. They're called ultra thins from a company called aeon percussion. I think they're basically a knockoff of RT's combos. Pretty damn close, they're just a little shorter. But same thickness and gloss finish as combos. They only come in nylon though. Definitely does the job at least until Regal Tip comes back if it ever actually happens. Been using for a week now and I dig em. We'll see how they hold up after a good amount of jam sessions.

Um, Regal Tip has been back for a few months now. I don’t think they’ve got the full line of sticks they had yet, but they’re definitely back.

Regal Tip Combo sticks have a "Coming Soon" label on them on their website. I believe they were in stock a few weeks back but they must be sold out again already. Hopefully back in stock soon.

I wonder if they are only selling direct now off the website and not sending product to stores?

That is correct. I don’t know if it’s by choice or if f they haven’t lined up a new dealer network yet, but I don’t see them at stores.

Has there been any movement on this? Last I checked they only had one model of stick in stock. 5A But Naked. Along with a few multi-percussion sticks, like the Thai Sticks, 3/8" Timbale, and Aluminum Brush. There's still zero advertising, zero social media presence, just seems like they tried selling off old inventory and are letting it die.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been much change to the website since I purchased some shake out brushes in mid-May of this year. Just wish they would sell the company, its brands, capital equipment, and goodwill, so someone with deep pockets and abilities can perpetuate the company. It's clear after all these years the Calato family is not willing, or able to produce anything at this point. I suspect that what they are offering on the website is mearly NOS that they are just offloading.

You are correct-Everything on the website is bascially "Coming Soon". The only in stock items as of 08/13/2024 are:

5A But Naked
Gripped Thai Sticks
Gripped Fatty Thai Sticks
3/8" Timbale Sticks
Yellowjacket Retractable Brushes
Yellowjacket Throw Brushes
Aluminum Retractable Brushes
500-PLB Throw Brushes

That's it.

Yesterday, 8/12 I didn't see the Yellowjacket's or Throw Brush listed as available. I may have missed it, or it could have been updated today.
All of those brushes, aside from the Aluminum, are also "on sale," marked down by almost 50%

When they first "re-launched" I was pretty convinced they were just liquidating inventory. I'm even more convinced now.

I agree with you! The only thing that changed my mind was when, for a very brief period, they had 7A and Jazz wood tip models available. This was probably 6-9 months ago (or more). I got them and the sticks are slightly different. The finish is slightly different and there was no tell-tale "black dot" or "pencil lead" on the butt end of the stick like there was before. So, the stick is different, so allegedly someone is making them, but obviously not in very large quantities.

This was also my experience with the new Jazz model. They went with a centerless grinding method of manufacturing, and I guess they did away with the black plastic dipping rod for applying the finish. I didn't notice much change in the finish, however.

I wonder if they were experimenting with outsourcing the sticks instead of making them in house, and that hasn't panned out?

It would explain the halfa$$ed updates to the website. Maybe just trying out a few models to gauge traffic and interest.

IDK, but at this point I would never be interested unless the whole company sold to an outfit that was committed.

They shut down in mid-2019 in order to change the machinery over to the new grinders. First time I tried the new sticks was around June 2020 when they briefly reopened.
I was unaware of the black dot missing from the butt end. The last couple years I was with them I had a custom black stick, so there wasn't a dot anyway. I can honestly say the grinder sticks were the best quality I had ever seen from them!
Sadly that was also the last order I ever got. Spring 2021 it was time to place another order. I got a series of excuses as to why my sticks never showed up. None of my phone calls or emails were ever responded to. My only communication was oddly through Instagram. Six months later I did get a long text message basically saying the company was at a stand still and no production was happening. Lot's of internal family drama.
And now here we are...

On the one hand, I get people needing what they like to use. On the other hand, I think my love for playing transcends the gear I use to play. So if something is no longer available, I’ll find something and use that instead. Regal Tip could really be dying - they certainly wouldn’t be the first company to not survive changes since the pandemic. And they won’t be the last. Adapt and overcome, right?

Well you pretty much have to at this point.
