Ukulele, Borhran and raising kids

Hey dudes
I have been away from DW forum for a loooong time. So what has nutha been up to?
- I bowed out of admin duties on the forum about ten years ago because I couldn't give Bernhard the time his great site deserves - as I was becoming a dad and work was getting tough (being an admin takes a lot of time folks - always respect the mods for the amount of work they do)
- about 8 years ago - seeing a video of Tamain Gardener playing the ukulele I decided to give it a try. AND LOVED IT. so now I own 15 of the little things (4 of them I made myself). I also teach ukulele to hundreds of kids now.
- I'm still drumming and teaching drums like a mad man - I have 45 weekly kit pupils and over 120 djembe pupils in groups and 60 steel pan pupils - plus doing about 50 gigs a year and playing at church.
- I have also taken up the irish bodhran just for those folky jams that sometimes come along

so all in all it is a busy great life
love you all
J

Thanks for checking in. Good to "see" you again. It's obvious by the above that you are one busy man. Continued success.

Very nice, when I worked at a local music store in Texas, we hired a Scottsman named Colin for instrument repairs, brass specialist.

One Saturday he brought two of his bag pipe fellas to play in the front; and, asked me to play the Bodhrean for them. I was honored and nervous (I am Hispanic and they were fully kilted if that makes sense).
Well anyway I just pulsed the beats the best I could, and afterwords they excitedly invited me to play further; but I never pursued as I was in a Nixon’s coverband (lol) at the time.

Wish I would have taken that up just to learn more. Nonetheless very cool things you have going on!

Dang has it been ten years. I remember when you made a return and mentioned your new discovery/love- the ukulele. Sounds like life has really been good to you-just busy. "I have 45 weekly kit pupils and over 120 djembe pupils in groups and 60 steel pan pupils - plus doing about 50 gigs a year and playing at church." Yep real busy.

Good times amigo! I played snare drum for a Pipe Band in Phoenix for a few years, really sharpened up my trad grip too. I din notice that the implied swing that is prevalent over a low of traditional Scottish music is very similar to the way a lot of Mariachi tunes are played.
