tubular bells

does anyone know how to make a set of tubular bells ? I really just need a e flat for a piece ....any ideas the band don't have finances to buy a set ....

Get a piece of 1" or 1.5" steel pipe and hack saw it just flat of Eb. Use a metal file to fine tune it up. Make sure to drill the mounting string holes first.

any idea of a length to start at ?
This is tricky, because every thickness of tubing will produce a different note. What you need to do is find a length of pipe, probably no longer than 6" (since you will, after all, be playing it). Find out what note it sounds when you play it, and do a little math. Every time you cut it in half, the fundamental goes up an octave, so you'll have to calculate, roughly, how much to cut off, and it's really hit-and-miss, unless you write up and equation that correlates pitches and frequencies with the length of the pipe and the pitch it resonates at.
