Tony Williams

They were a company then, but didn't really start producing drums until the end of the 80s. They had the Camco tooling back then, but mostly just produced hardware for the first 15 years or so.

The first DW drum kit catalog came out in '89, according to DW.
I stand corrected. Although I swear I saw pictures of Chad Wackerman playing an early DW kit in Modern Drummer in 1988. Anybody got that issue? I could be wrong

Actually they were. They were a small boutique company around the end of the 70s - that was the era a lot of old timers call their best drums era 😉

This vid probably happened in the mid-to-late 80s and he’s rocking yellow Gretsch there. Should be around the time he recorded Rise.

I won’t rub in the history lesson. I looked it up just before I wrote that one post so it’s not like I know anything :p

Anyway, if we’re still following the “when did DW start making drums”, I found this picture of Chad Wackerman when he was featured in the December 1988 issue of Modern Drummer playing a DW kit. So I don’t think I’m crazy?

They manufactured drums before that '89 catalog.

It is from 1991.

Buddy Rich played dw drums in 1983.

Yes, they took orders for drums prior to the 89 catalog. They had the tooling. I just mean they weren't really making drums big-time til the 80s. Unlikely that they would have been able to offer reliable touring support back in the early days.

I remember being at ProDrum in the mid to late 80s and seeing those early DW drums. They used curved spurs and sported Gauger RIMS-no other finishes except natural maple, but word on the street was every player in town loved them.
