tonights provided backline kit.......................................yeah....................................................

no bass drum legs and a single ply batter head with no kick pads and no padding
floor tom upside down and stuffed with a pillow and badly tuned
smaller floor tom had no legs and was upside down and badly tuned
rack tom was as written, completely dead and lifeless,
snare wouldnt tune up so sounded like detuned st anger snare combined with a metal trash can.

oh, and no drum rug either.

*EVENTUALLY* some legs for the kick and a carpet was found, but nothing could be done for the toms or snare.

luckily i took my own snare and hardware. taking a full kit was out of the question due to transport restrictions.

so yeah, managed to play the full hour with my band, but had to be gentle with the kick and toms.

Oh my... I really feel for you, that's just awful. I had a similar experience a long time ago and it has made me really gun shy about anywhere that claims to have a drumset available to use.

Wow, my god ; I've been there but not as bad as your experience - I think I would have been upset as hell.
The floor tom seems mismatch with the minimum amount of lugs. Bass drum without front head / muffling, brrrr...

That's gonna test your mettle......fo-shizzle.

And this is why I always bring my own gear. You can't polish a turd.

That kit needs putting out of its misery. Shame, even the cheapest of kits with a little bit of maintenance last forever and with good heads and tuning are fine for a backline.

i usually try to take my own kit but my band were limited for transport so only had two medium cars that were full of either everyones gear with no spare space, or everyone in the band :(

made the best of the situation and cobbled something together. bass drum legs and a rug finally turned up nearly 2 hours later before any band could play it.

the mismatched floor tom was stuffed with a pillow inside it, so i took that out, shoved it in the bass drum, and tuned and muffled the head as best as i could. plus the floor tom was upside down, no batter head on the batter side, but a stock batter head on the reso side, so it only raised up a small amount. the smaller floor tom had no legs for it.

wasnt upset, but was seriously doubting any of the bands could play until it got fixed.

Let me guess, the promoter said "PRO level drum kit provided"

Been there many times
the promoter/organiser didnt give anyone a tech spec until the night before the gig, had weeks if not months to sort it all out and left everything till the last minute. wasnt even billed as a "pro level kit", just got told "we have a kit, just bring hardware and breakables" (which turned out to be the promoters OLD old kit from his garage). we doubt we'll play there again even with them saying they'll have us back any time as sound and lights were great, but backline gear was shoddy at best.

yeah, the tech spec (which we got the night before the show, after weeks of asking) said "drumkit shell pack, jsut bring hardware and breakables".

if we had the space, i would of taken my full kit, but alas, transport constraints stopped me.

isnt the first time ive had a kit like this.

played a gig in a place a fair distance from home with the same band, got told there was a kit, jsut bring breakables and hardware.

got there, toms were in half decent shape, but the kick drum had the cheap stock batter head, no dampening inisde and was unported, the support band went on, 2 songs into their set............*BAM*, batter head went right through. which i told the organisers was going to happen and they didnt listen.

I wish I had even THAT in half of the NYC places I played in the 90s.

Dan
never played in the USA (and probably never will get chance to), but ive heard some places said they had house kits and they were in even rougher shape than the one i posted! always wanted to visit NYC.
