Thinking about making a snare drum, but what material, snare wires, bearing and depth should I use for a fat and "ringyish" 70's rock sound (VanHal1)?

Just like everyone suggested 402 coated ambassador batter, clear ambassador/diplomat reso and no dampening.

Stop. Relax. Chill the heck out. Start saving some cash. Learn what you want by listening to demos in the net. Don't waste your money going half way. Learn how to distinguish the snares you are looking for. I picked up a Supra out of a pawn shop for $70 s few years back.... and a GOOD one because I knew what I was looking at. Learn what you want and have the patience to wait until you can get it. It is worth the wait.

Yup, I'd say to slow down a bit. Go out there and play as many snares as possible. I'm one of those people who believes that the right instruments will speak to you.

Believe it or not, the "build it yourself in order to save money" idea actually does not save you a lot of money unless you just piecemeal it together from old snares. Even then, you may end up with a sub-par product. And that's another thing about building a snare yourself - you can get all of the supplies you need in order build the perfect drum for you, and it may end up great, but it may end up being a total dud. Your resale is going to be horrible no matter what. With all of this said, if you still want to have the experience of building a snare yourself, I'd start here: https://www.drumsupply.com/collections/diy-snare-drum-kits
I love the idea of building my own drums, but I can't build a better drum than Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, or Radio King, so there's no point in me even trying.

I'd look to the used market, and take your time, and enjoy the process! There are so many great snares out there for good prices if you are patient. So many drum companies make great snare drums.

If you are outside of the US where there is little-to-no used drum market, then you have my complete sympathy. In that case, do whatever you want to do, and have fun in the process!

So Mr. OP...Gabriel.....what country are you in now?
